Physician-founded clean skincare designed for melanin-rich and sensitive skin.

The story behind AbsoluteJOI Read the full story

The idea arrived in a Paris shop, not a lab. Dr. Anne Beal, by then a physician with a long career in medicine and corporate healthcare, walked into the DIY skincare store Aroma-Zone and found it full of Black and Brown women buying raw ingredients to mix their own products. The scene crystallized something she had felt personally: women of color were so poorly served by mainstream skincare that many were formulating from scratch, and the statistic she later cited, that roughly 70 percent of women of color say existing products don't work for them, suddenly had a face.

Beal's credentials make the brand unusual among clean-beauty launches. With a degree from Brown, a medical degree from Cornell, and a public-health degree from Columbia, she had been a Harvard researcher, a pediatrician, president of the Aetna Foundation, and a chief patient officer at Sanofi, the role that placed her in France. That science-and-policy background shaped a deliberately narrow mission: gentle, effective care for melanin-rich, sensitive skin, built around hyperpigmentation without the harsh skin-bleaching agents like hydroquinone that have long been pushed at this market.

Founded in 2018 and based in Washington, D.C., the brand kept its formulas free of parabens, fragrance, dyes, and bleach, and framed itself around skin health and graceful maturity rather than the usual anti-aging panic. Its hero is the Skin Refining Night Oil, which pairs a granactive retinoid with vitamins C and E to address tone and texture more gently than prescription retinoids. Early funding leaned on community support, including crowdfunding and a grant from Glossier's initiative for Black-owned beauty businesses, and the brand reported unusually high repeat-customer rates, a sign that the people it was built for kept coming back. It remains a small, founder-driven, science-minded operation rather than a marketing machine, which is both its charm and its constraint.

AbsoluteJOI Daily Hydrating Facial Cream, a lightweight vitamin-rich day cream with niacinamide, vitamin C, an aquaporin peptide and hyaluronic acid Vitamin-Rich Daily Hydrator
AbsoluteJOI moisturizer

Daily Hydrating Facial Cream

A genuinely well-rounded lightweight day cream that packs a real active deck — niacinamide, stable vitamin C, vitamins E, B5 and B6, an aquaporin peptide and layered hydration — into a fast-absorbing texture aimed at the tone-evening needs of melanin-rich skin. It hydrates and brightens nicely over time and wears beautifully under makeup. The one frustration, as with parts of this line, is the added fragrance, which narrows its fit for the sensitive skin the brand champions.

AbsoluteJOI Mineral Tinted Moisturizer SPF 40, a fragrance-free tinted mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and iron oxides designed for melanin-rich and sensitive skin No-White-Cast Mineral Tint
AbsoluteJOI sunscreen

Mineral Tinted Moisturizer SPF 40

A genuinely thoughtful mineral tinted moisturizer built where the mainstream long fell short: melanin-rich, sensitive skin. Iron oxides erase the gray cast that ruins most mineral sunscreens on deeper tones, while squalane, hyaluronic acid and a soothing antioxidant complex make it hydrate and calm rather than dry. Fragrance-free and gentle, it is an easy recommendation for the right skin. The honest limits are a two-shade range and a modest mineral percentage that demands generous application.

AbsoluteJOI Skin Refining Night Oil with Retinol, a fragrance-free gentle Granactive retinoid and vitamin C facial oil in an omega-rich barrier-nourishing base Gentle Retinoid Night Oil
AbsoluteJOI retinoid

Skin Refining Night Oil with Retinol

A smartly built gentle retinoid oil that solves a real problem: it refines and brightens with a low-irritation Granactive Retinoid and oil-soluble vitamin C, cushioned in a nourishing omega-oil base, so skin gets vitamin A benefits without the dryness or redness that can trigger dark marks in deeper skin. Fragrance-free and genuinely gentle, it is a strong pick for sensitive and pigment-prone skin. The catches are a premium price and an oil format too rich for oily skin.

AbsoluteJOI Firming Peptide Face Serum, a lightweight serum with Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline peptides and hyaluronic acid for firmness and hydration Multi-Peptide Firming Serum
AbsoluteJOI serum

Firming Peptide Face Serum

A well-chosen, affordable multi-peptide serum — Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline plus layered hyaluronic acid — that hydrates immediately and supports firmness over time. The actives are legitimate and the price is fair. The frustrating asterisk is that, unlike most of AbsoluteJOI's line, this one is fragranced with bergamot and orange peel oils, which clashes with the brand's sensitive-skin reputation and makes a fragrance-free peptide serum the smarter pick for reactive skin.

More about AbsoluteJOI

AbsoluteJOI is a Black-owned, physician-formulated brand founded by Dr. Anne Beal, focused on melanin-rich and sensitive skin.

This lightweight vitamin-rich day cream (also sold as the Aqua Infusion Skin Cream) reflects that clinical approach, though it includes fragrance, a departure from the brand's fragrance-free staples.
