Israeli skincare brand built on mineral-rich mud and water from the Dead Sea.

The story behind AHAVA Read the full story

It started with a stand of mud. In the mid-1980s, a spa technician named Ziva Gilad watched tourists at the Dead Sea scoop the black mineral mud into bags to carry home, and realized the gray sludge nobody was selling might be the product itself. The idea matured into a single retail stand peddling body scrub to tourists, a venture that pulled in roughly a million dollars in its first year and quickly outgrew its origins. From the beginning the company was an unusual hybrid: a cosmetics business rooted in the cooperative settlements that surrounded the Dead Sea shore, with kibbutzim among its early shareholders alongside Israeli holding firms. The scientific spine of the brand became the proprietary mineral concentrate it derived in-house, a process that yielded multiple patents and turned a raw geological curiosity into a standardized, repeatable skincare active. The Dead Sea's water is roughly ten times saltier than the ocean and unusually rich in magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which gave the brand a genuine point of difference no laboratory could replicate. That geography also became its central controversy. For decades the primary manufacturing plant sat at a settlement on the West Bank's Dead Sea coast, drawing sustained boycott campaigns from activists who argued the brand profited from contested land and resources. The company responded in part by opening a second production facility on the Israeli side of the Green Line in 2016, though the disputes never fully receded. Ownership eventually passed to a large Chinese conglomerate, which gave the brand global distribution muscle and access to the booming Asian beauty market. Through the corporate shuffles, the formulas stayed anchored to the same singular source material, and the brand's identity remained inseparable from a body of water that is, geologically and politically, unlike any other on earth.

AHAVA body care

Dead Sea Water Mineral Hand Cream

A genuinely good everyday hand cream that absorbs fast, leaves hands soft and non-greasy, and carries AHAVA's signature Dead Sea mineral story at a fair price. The moisturizing fundamentals are sound and the value is solid — the main drawback is a notably heavy fragrance load that makes it a poor fit for sensitive or eczema-prone hands.

Time To Hydrate Essential Day Moisturizer

A dependable, no-drama everyday day cream that keeps normal-to-dry skin soft and comfortable through a smart, skin-identical amino-acid and humectant blend. The hydration fundamentals are genuinely sound; the Dead Sea minerals are more accent than engine here, and the fragrance and mid-range price are the main reasons it is good rather than great.

AHAVA Dead Sea Osmoter Concentrate serum bottle, a triple-concentration Dead Sea mineral hydration booster for dull, dehydrated skin Mineral Hydration Booster
AHAVA serum

Dead Sea Osmoter Concentrate

The one AHAVA product where the famous Dead Sea minerals genuinely lead the formula — a lightweight, broadly-suitable hydration booster that plumps and brightens skin through real osmotic humectancy. It is fairly priced, easy to layer, and gentle enough for most skin types; the only real limitations are the fragrance and the fact that it hydrates rather than treats.

AHAVA moisturizer

Osmoter Concentrate Supreme Hydration Cream

A well-built, lightweight daily moisturizer that carries a genuinely meaningful dose of AHAVA's Dead Sea minerals alongside squalane and plant oils, leaving skin plumped and comfortable without heaviness. It is a sound mineral-led hydration cream — the caveats are the fragrance, a mid-prestige price, and a blue-light-defense angle that is more marketing than substance.

AHAVA mask

Purifying Mud Mask

A genuinely good purifying mud mask that uses authentic Dead Sea silt and kaolin to absorb oil and clean congested skin — and, refreshingly, does it fragrance-free while balancing the clays with emollients and soothers so it doesn't over-strip. For oily and combination skin it is an easy, sensible recommendation; only very dry or sensitive skin and the mild sulfate give pause.

More about AHAVA

AHAVA is an Israeli skincare brand founded in 1988, built entirely around Dead Sea minerals and its proprietary Osmoter mineral concentrate.

Its credibility rests on decades of Dead Sea sourcing and a recognizable mineral positioning rather than clinical dermatology, with formulas that pair those minerals with conventional emollients.
