The story behind A'kin Read the full story
Hair came before skin. The botanist-chemist behind the brand spent the late 1980s convinced that mainstream cosmetics were needlessly synthetic, and his first commercial answer in 1994 was a plant-based hair-care range called Al'chemy. Only later did he extend that same green chemistry into a face-and-body line, treating skincare as a natural sequel to the haircare technologies he had already proven, rather than a separate venture.
The formulating discipline runs deeper than the "natural" label suggests. The lab leans on supercritical CO2 extraction rather than cheaper cold-pressing or heat-based methods, a process reportedly several times more expensive that pulls active compounds from botanicals without the high temperatures that degrade them. That is why the brand's signature rosehip oil arrives as a dark, concentrated liquid boasting a very high omega fatty-acid content, stabilized with a touch of rosemary leaf antioxidant and a multi-year shelf life. The technical team has long argued that plant molecules are inherently more compatible with skin than lab-built substitutes, a philosophy that predates the entire modern clean-beauty marketing wave.
The brand also reflects the wider Australian natural-beauty tradition, which built a global reputation on indigenous and plant-derived ingredients long before "clean" was a Sephora aisle. Its free-from stance, no parabens, sulfates, synthetic colors, or artificial fragrance, was a quiet ethical position rather than a fear-based sales pitch.
The practical caveat is one of focus, not quality. Gentle hydration and antioxidant support are genuine strengths, but the catalog was never built for high-strength correction like prescription-grade retinoids, so expectations should be calibrated to what botanicals can realistically do. More frustrating for loyalists, the owner has steadily steered resources toward natural hair care and deodorant in recent years, thinning the skincare offering and making specific facial products harder to track down on the shelf.

More about A'kin
A'kin was created in 2002 by botanical chemist Will Evans, drawing on natural-formulation work he began in Australia in the late 1980s, and has been owned by McPherson's since 2014.
Its naturally derived, rosehip-anchored formulas are gentle and well-made, though the brand has recently scaled back its skincare range in favor of hair care and deodorant.
