The story behind Alpha-H Read the full story

The product that built Alpha-H got its name from a friend. Michelle Doherty had spent close to fifteen years fighting cystic acne, cycling through antibiotics, harsh scrubs, and prescription creams with nothing that lasted, before she discovered glycolic acid and began mixing her own overnight resurfacing treatment. She handed a bottle to a friend, who used it once and called it liquid gold. The name stuck, and so did the formula.

Doherty bought the fledgling company in 1995 after its early products transformed her own skin and, by her account, her confidence along with it. She quit her job to do it. At the time exfoliating acids were treated with suspicion, dismissed as too harsh for a home bathroom cabinet, so much of Alpha-H's early work was simply educating customers on why a low-pH acid left on overnight could reset skin rather than wreck it.

Liquid Gold, which reached the market around 2000, became one of skincare's genuine cult objects. At its peak it was selling two bottles a minute, carried in clinics, department stores, TV shopping channels, and airline amenity kits across more than two dozen countries, and the range grew past sixty products while the glycolic treatment stayed the clear hero. Doherty died in 2020, at 57, after a two-year illness; the brand she built carried on.

Ownership has shifted twice since. A US private-equity firm took a controlling stake in 2019, with the Doherty family keeping a substantial holding, and in 2025 the company was sold to a Hong Kong wellness group for a reported fifty million dollars, with a stated aim of expanding into Asia. What you are buying remains refreshingly unfussy: well-formulated acids, glycolic foremost, at sensible concentrations with a low-pH system that genuinely matters for efficacy. The cult mystique adds a premium, but the formulations are real and the founding mission, professional-grade exfoliation made usable at home, still holds.

Alpha-H Clear Skin Daily Hydrator Gel 50ml frosted jar Oily Skin Daily Driver
Alpha-H moisturizer

Clear Skin Daily Hydrator Gel

A meaningfully formulated daily gel moisturizer for oily and breakout-prone skin. 5% niacinamide plus salicylic acid and zinc PCA give it real acne-prevention substance, while glycerin and hyaluronate keep the matte finish from feeling stripping. Citrus essential oil keeps it off the sensitive-skin list, but for the right user it's a quietly excellent daily driver.

Clear Skin Face and Body Wash

Alpha-H's 2026 Clear Skin Face and Body Wash combines 2% salicylic acid with niacinamide and aloe in a daily-use BHA cleanser for face and body acne. At $31 for 185ml the value is mid-tier within the clinical-skincare BHA category. Effective for acne-prone oily skin; not pregnancy-safe and too drying for sensitive or dry users.

Alpha-H Vitamin A Serum 25ml frosted glass bottle with airless pump Buffered Beginner Retinol
Alpha-H retinoid

Vitamin A Serum

Alpha-H built its 0.5% retinol on a squalane and plant-oil base specifically to make a meaningful retinol concentration tolerable for the beginners it knew were already running aggressive AHA routines. The buffering works — this is one of the few 0.5% retinol serums new users can actually stick with through the adjustment period. The price is the only meaningful complaint.

Alpha-H Protection Plus Daily SPF 50+ 50ml white squeeze tube Acid-User Companion SPF
Alpha-H sunscreen

Protection Plus Daily SPF 50+

Alpha-H built this four-filter SPF 50+ specifically as the protective companion to its Liquid Gold treatment — a recognition that AHA users need disciplined sun protection more than most. The texture is genuinely lightweight for an SPF 50+ chemical formula and the no-white-cast performance is excellent across skin tones. The oxybenzone content is the formula's biggest 2026 liability.

Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+

An excellent multi-active daily SPF that meets Australia's stricter TGA SPF 50+ standard and includes modern UVA filters that put it well ahead of most US sunscreens. Niacinamide, centella, and hyaluronate make it a genuine moisturizer rather than just a sunscreen step. Premium-priced but uniquely well-formulated.

Balancing Cleanser

A smart daily gel cleanser that pairs mandelic acid and trace salicylic acid with a mild glucoside surfactant base. Leaves skin clear and smooth without stripping, with a bright citrus-lavender scent. The essential oils make it a no-go for highly sensitive users, but for normal-to-oily skin it's a quietly excellent everyday option.

Alpha-H exfoliant

Smoothing AHA Face and Body Scrub

Alpha-H's Smoothing AHA Face and Body Scrub combines the brand's iconic 12% glycolic acid AHA chemistry with bamboo stem physical exfoliation in a dual-action wash-off format. At $36 for 185ml the value is reasonable for the clinical-skincare tier. Strong on face and body texture work; not suitable for sensitive skin, pregnancy, or barrier-compromised users.

Alpha-H Hyaluronic 8 Super Serum 50ml frosted glass bottle with airless pump Layered Hydration MVP
Alpha-H serum

Hyaluronic 8 Super Serum

Alpha-H stacks eight molecular weights of hyaluronic acid with polyglutamic acid, ectoin, and 4% niacinamide to build a hydration system that actually outlasts the four-hour window most HA serums hit. It's overpriced compared to drugstore alternatives, but the supporting ingredients earn the premium for dehydrated, reactive, or mature skin.

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment 100ml frosted glass bottle Cult Glycolic Original
Alpha-H exfoliant

Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment

Liquid Gold has been Alpha-H's signature product since 1997, and the reason it's survived nearly three decades essentially unchanged is the pH. At 2.8, its 5% glycolic acid is in a far more active free-acid state than buffered competitors, which is what produces the genuine morning-after glow. The unnecessary fragrance and sensitive-skin caution are the only real complaints.

Peptide Lip Perfector

Alpha-H's Peptide Lip Perfector combines the cooling-plumping perfector chemistry (peppermint oil) with tripeptide-1 (GHK precursor) and a sheer rosy tint at $30 for 15g. The cooling sensation is immediate; the peptide claim is more supportive marketing in the lip-balm format. Peppermint oil and fragrance allergens make it unsuitable for sensitive lip skin.

Alpha-H's Firming Peptide Body Oil extends the brand's 2025 peptide collection into body care — Argireline plus microalgae oil and macadamia oil in a dry-oil format at $36 for 100ml. Pleasant texture, modest peptide firming claim, fragrance-allergen consideration for sensitive skin. Best for users seeking treatment-positioned body oil rather than pure sensory experience.

Alpha-H Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid 25ml dropper bottle Stable Vitamin C Without the Sting
Alpha-H serum

Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid

Alpha-H's Vitamin C Serum is the answer for users who want a brightening serum that doesn't oxidize within a month or sting on application. It uses 10% 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid — a stabilized derivative — at a near-neutral pH, paired with hyaluronic acid and licorice extract to round out the brightening complex. Less potent than a traditional 15-20% L-ascorbic acid serum, but considerably easier to live with.

At $80 for 30ml the pricing is premium for the Australian clinical-skincare tier. Lightweight, well-tolerated, and meaningfully more multi-active than single-peptide alternatives.

Illuminating Enzyme Polish

Alpha-H's Illuminating Enzyme Polish is the brand's sensitive-skin-friendly answer to its aggressive AHA exfoliants — protease and lipase enzymes with kaolin clay, colloidal oatmeal, rice powder, and Australian native rosella flower in a water-activated powder format. At $46 for 50g the upfront price is mid-luxury but powder longevity makes per-use cost reasonable. Genuinely suitable for very sensitive skin types.

More about Alpha-H

Founded in 1995, Alpha-H is a cosmeceutical brand built around well-studied exfoliating acids (notably glycolic acid) delivered in low-pH formulations; its credibility rests on established active ingredients and a long professional-channel track record rather than brand-specific published clinical trials.
