It started as a college side project in Monterey. Two recent graduates, Ben Holber and Ryan Hambley, had been kicking around the idea of photo-based dermatology for only a few months when they heard about a regional startup competition, the Startup Challenge Venture Division, and submitted their application the same afternoon. They won the twenty-thousand-dollar prize, and Holber later credited that small purse not just with funding the build but with conferring enough credibility to start serious conversations with development partners. Under its original name, the platform did one narrow thing: connect patients to a dermatologist who could assess photos and write a prescription. The flaw revealed itself quickly. Diagnosis was easy to deliver remotely; the prescription was where everyone got stuck. Patients in pharmacy deserts, or facing out-of-stock compounds, kept falling through the gap between a doctor's note and an actual tube of medication. The fix was the pivotal decision in the company's life: build its own compounding pharmacy and ship custom formulations straight to the patient's door, closing the loop the early model left open. The rebrand under a new name accompanied that shift to a true end-to-end service. The combative editorial voice came later and became the brand's signature, a willingness to name pseudoscience that most beauty companies carefully avoided for fear of alienating the wellness market. That stance won admirers but also marked the company as something other than a conventional cosmetics brand, which mattered when a much larger telehealth parent absorbed it and eventually decided dermatology no longer fit a strategy tilting hard toward weight loss. The closure was a portfolio decision about focus, not a referendum on whether the medicine, or the myth-busting, had been right.
