The conversion moment happened in Australia. Visiting family there, Jerry Kim encountered a culture where essential oils and herbal remedies were woven into everyday prevention and healing rather than treated as spa indulgences — and the idea lodged itself deep enough that he eventually walked away from a steady financial-industry career to chase it. He trained as a first-generation aromatherapist, and the brand's earliest products weren't creams at all but aromatherapy roll-ons, a clue to how differently it thinks about fragrance: as a functional, plant-derived tool rather than a synthetic afterthought to be stripped out.
That origin explains the brand's central conviction — that natural essential oils could do the job synthetic fragrance was doing, and that gentle, plant-forward formulas could still perform. From there it grew into one of K-beauty's pioneering clean and vegan houses, sourcing ingredients directly from growers and submitting to outside scrutiny early. It became a partner of the US Environmental Working Group's Safe Cosmetics Campaign back in 2009, well before "clean" became a marketing reflex, and aligned itself with The Vegan Society and COSMOS standards.
Where the brand is genuinely distinctive is operational rather than cosmetic. Kim built a small in-house factory and R&D center deliberately, hoping it would have a "butterfly effect" on the industry, and the company's sustainability work runs to concrete, almost eccentric detail — an electric truck that circles Seoul each week collecting recycled glass bottles, packaging built from recyclable materials, and an early move into refill-and-recycle retail that let customers top up bestsellers from their own containers.
Its most famous product is, fittingly, a curveball: a rosemary scalp treatment that became a genuine hair-care hit on European Amazon charts, an export almost nobody would have predicted from a Korean skincare label. The reasonable caveat is the category's perennial one — essential oils, the brand's signature, can themselves irritate reactive skin — so the gentleness is real but not universal, and each formula deserves judging on its own.
