The two-milliliter glass ampoule did not arrive until 1970, and once it did, it quietly became the most imitated idea in professional skincare. Sealed sterile, single-dose, preservative-light, it treated a serum the way a pharmacy treats an injectable, and decades before drugstore brands started selling capsule serums as a novelty, this was already the icon of the line. Snapping one open in a treatment room is a small piece of theater that the brand has never abandoned, because the format genuinely does deliver fresh actives rather than a jar slowly oxidizing on a bathroom shelf.
The identity around that ampoule was built by a marketer as much as a chemist. After acquiring the young company in the 1960s and moving it to Aachen, the new ownership gave the brand its black-rose emblem and even introduced mirrors into salons as so-called guides to beauty, a piece of retail psychology that helped turn a German biomedical-cosmetics outfit into an aspirational ritual. The strategy was always the treatment room, never the supermarket aisle. The first dedicated training center opened in Aachen in 1983 to school estheticians worldwide, and the first branded institute landed in Palm Beach, Florida in 1997, seeding a spa network that now reaches across more than seventy countries.
Later chapters lean increasingly green. In 2017 the company built a geothermal-powered headquarters, in 2020 it began planting a thirty-thousand-tree forest, and in 2023 it opened a manufacturing campus pitched as one of the most sustainable cosmetics factories in the world, churning out roughly half a million products a day with targets to electrify operations entirely by 2030. For a brand that sells single-dose glass theater at a premium, the sustainability push is also a quiet answer to the obvious criticism of all that packaging, an attempt to keep the ritual without the guilt.
