Bepanthen

The molecule came before the product. In 1934, researchers showed that pantothenic acid had a striking effect on cell proliferation in yeast, a finding that pointed toward a topical that could speed how skin renews itself. The practical breakthrough was switching to dexpanthenol, a stable alcohol analogue of that acid which, unlike the parent compound, actually penetrates skin and converts to it once inside. That chemistry quirk is the reason an unassuming ointment became a fixture in European medicine cabinets, prized first not as cosmetics but as a wound-and-recovery aid sold from behind the pharmacy counter. For generations the brand lived in the practical, slightly clinical corner of skincare: the tube reached for after a scrape, a sunburn, a session under a tattoo needle, or for the chafed skin of a newborn. Its reputation was built in maternity wards and on changing tables long before pro-vitamin B5 turned up as a headline ingredient on serum labels. Rather than chase trends, the line grew by addition, branching from the original repair ointment into a family of formats: a thinner cream for everyday use, dedicated baby ranges deliberately stripped of fragrance, dye and unnecessary preservatives, and later face-focused versions aimed at sensitised adult skin. The through-line is restraint. The classic ointment is frankly greasy, an occlusive design choice rather than an oversight, and the gentler formulas are plain on purpose, built to do one job without provoking the skin they are meant to calm. There is no actives-stacking, no anti-ageing narrative, no reinvention every season. What the brand offers instead is the credibility of an ingredient with an unusually long evidence trail in soothing and barrier support, delivered in formulas whose entire pitch is that they are boring, predictable and kind to compromised skin.

More about Bepanthen
Bepanthen was created in 1944 in Switzerland around dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5) and has been part of Bayer's consumer-health portfolio since 2005.
As a long-standing pharmacy brand built on a well-studied soothing and barrier-repair ingredient, it carries decades of clinical and real-world use behind its core formulas.
