The story behind Bioré Read the full story

The most famous product Bioré ever made is, at heart, a strip of tape, and in its first year on Japanese shelves in 1996, that strip earned the equivalent of about ten billion yen. The Pore Pack, better known abroad as the pore strip, turned an oddly satisfying ritual (peel, inspect, recoil) into a global phenomenon and became the thing most Westerners picture when they hear the name Bioré.

The brand is Japanese to the core, owned by Kao Corporation, a Tokyo company founded all the way back in 1887 by Tomiro Nagase to make affordable, high-quality facial soap; he named it 'Kao,' a play on the Japanese word for face. Bioré launched as a Kao skincare line in 1980 and built its reputation on cleansers and makeup removers before the pore strips made it a household name. When the strips reached the United States in 1997, Kao routed them through its American subsidiary but deliberately kept that connection quiet, judging the Bioré name hipper and better suited to a young audience than its older sister brand.

Today Bioré spans cleansers, makeup removers, blemish patches, and, especially in its Japanese range, beloved lightweight sunscreens, all leaning on Kao's deep research in surfactants and skin science.

The honest read: Bioré is affordable, widely available, and backed by a serious R&D operation, which is more than many drugstore brands can say. Its Japanese sunscreens in particular are genuinely well-regarded for their elegant, weightless textures. The pore strips, though? They physically yank out the tops of clogged pores and sebaceous filaments, which is satisfying and temporary; they don't shrink pores or stop them refilling, and aggressive use can irritate. Treat the strips as a guilty pleasure rather than skincare, lean on the cleansers and sun care for the real work, and Bioré is a smart, low-cost pick.

Bioré treatment

Paint & Peel Liquid Pimple Patch

An inventive paint-on pimple patch: a liquid that dries into a near-invisible, customizable film, sealing 1% salicylic acid against a blemish for real leave-on treatment, at up to 100 uses for around $10. It's more invisible, flexible, and economical than a sticker patch and genuinely gentle. The honest trade-off is drawing power — unlike a hydrocolloid sticker, it doesn't absorb fluid or flatten a whitehead nearly as well. A great invisible treat-and-protect, a weaker 'draw-it-out.'

Biore exfoliant

2% BHA Exfoliating Hydra Serum

A declared 2 percent salicylic acid in a twelve-ingredient, fragrance-free, oil-free gel that Kao has built as a texture play, bouncy, bubble-flecked and cushiony, so the acid stays on the skin while a glycerin, butylene glycol and sorbitol trio keeps the finish soft. It unclogs and smooths oily, congested skin well for seventeen dollars and is one of the cleanest drugstore BHAs on the shelf; denatured alcohol second is what dissolves the acid and what will tighten drier faces, and a month-old product has no track record yet.

Pore Unclogging Scrub

One of the few drugstore scrubs that's actually worth its shelf space — a real 2% salicylic acid product in a soft-bead wax base that respects your skin barrier more than its age suggests. For oily, blackhead-prone users it's a legitimate cheap staple. Sensitive skin should pass, and no one should confuse it with a complete acne routine.

Bioré toner

Witch Hazel Pore Clarifying Toner

An effective leave-on 2% salicylic acid trapped in one of the harshest, most dated bases on the shelf: two drying alcohols, witch hazel, and menthol. The acid genuinely helps clear pores and breakouts, but the stripping vehicle over-dries and irritates nearly everyone but the toughest oily skin. The tight, stinging 'clean' feel is over-stripping, not efficacy. You can get the same active far more gently elsewhere — this is a relic worth skipping for almost everyone.

A discontinued drugstore scrub that combined 2% salicylic acid with baking soda and a list of unnecessary irritants. Its departure from shelves reflects the skincare market's evolution toward cleaner, more targeted acne treatments.

Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser

A legitimate, genuinely cheap acne cleanser: it carries the maximum OTC 2% salicylic acid as a registered acne drug, and that active really does help clear and prevent breakouts at around $8. The catch is the 'ice' — menthol, eucalyptus, and lavender pile on a cold tingle that's pure sensation, no skincare benefit, and real irritation potential, on top of already-strong surfactants. For oily and combination skin that wants an elegant daily sunscreen and makeup primer, it is a strong drugstore pick — but the high alcohol content and heavy fragrance make it a poor match for dry or sensitive skin, and the US filters trail the Asian original.

Alcohol second and a fragrance keep it off reactive and very dry skin, the pigment suits lighter tones and casts on deeper ones, and three of its filters keep it off US shelves; for oily, combination and normal skin that wants glow and real protection in one weightless step, it is a very good import.

Makeup Remover Cleansing Water

A polite, well-mannered Japanese take on the European micellar water category, with gentler surfactants and a more humectant-loaded base than typical drugstore cleansing waters. It excels at light cleansing tasks and travel use, but is not the right tool for removing the heavy hybrid sunscreens Japanese consumers wear daily.

Makeup Remover Perfect Cleansing Cream

The cream sibling to Biore's well-known Perfect Oil offers an effective makeup remover format that dry-skinned users tend to prefer to either oil or foam cleansing. The mineral-oil-based formula does real work, and the rich tube texture earns its place in winter routines — though oily skin and fungal-acne-prone users should look elsewhere.

Biore Marshmallow Whip Moisture Facial Wash 150ml pump bottle — Japanese pre-foaming cleanser for dry skin Best-Value J-Beauty Pump Foam
Bioré cleanser

Marshmallow Whip Moisture Facial Wash

Kao engineered the Marshmallow Whip Moisture variant around a single hardware trick — a pre-foaming pump that aerates the formula at dispensing — and tuned the surfactant chemistry to match. The parfum and propylene glycol holdovers prevent a higher ingredient score, but for around ten dollars, this is one of the best per-dollar daily moisturizing cleansers in the Japanese drugstore tier.

Biore Marshmallow Whip Rich Moisture face wash in a 150 ml pink-labeled pump bottle Winter J-Beauty Pick
Bioré cleanser

Marshmallow Whip Rich Moisture

The pink-labeled Rich Moisture variant is the most ambitious humectant engineering in the Marshmallow Whip line, softening a traditional Japanese soap base with glycerin, lecithin, and honey to make it tolerable for dry skin. The result is a meaningfully gentler wash than the Fresh Clear flagship, though still fundamentally a soap-based, fragranced cleanser rather than a true barrier-respecting one.

Biore The Cleanse Frictionless Cleansing Oil clear faceted pump bottle on its black Japanese blister card, 190 ml No-Rub Japanese Makeup Remover

The Cleanse Frictionless Cleansing Oil

A sixteen-ingredient cleansing oil built around one idea, that makeup should come off without rubbing: three light esters dissolve foundation and sunscreen on contact, five emulsifiers turn the oil to milk on a wet face and rinse it clean without a second cleanse, and a humectant trio, rare in the category, leaves the skin comfortable instead of tight. Kao's reformulation dropped the mineral oil, the price is under thirteen dollars through importers, and the only reservations are a light fragrance, a spilling wide-mouth bottle and the absence of any US brand supply; for dry and sensitive faces that remove makeup nightly, it is one of the best value cleansing oils available.

Gentle & Breathable Acne-Prone Cleanser

The gentle acne cleanser Bioré's harsher washes should have been: fragrance-free, sulfate-free, and non-stripping, using willow bark and a mild AHA to clarify acne-prone skin without leaving it tight or irritated. It's not a strong standalone acne treatment — the clarifying is gentle, and it still carries mild eucalyptus and lavender — but for sensitive, breakout-prone skin that gets over-stripped by typical acne washes, it's a genuinely good, smart, affordable daily cleanser, and the one in the lineup to actually buy.

Makeup Remover Perfect Oil

Japan's best-selling drugstore cleansing oil for nearly two decades, and the reason is unglamorous but real: Perfect Oil removes water-resistant Japanese sunscreen better than products costing three times as much. The mineral oil base will offend skincare purists, but the formula's track record and value are difficult to argue with.

Marshmallow Whip Fresh Clear

Japan's best-selling pump-foamer cleanser earns its reputation almost entirely on a brilliant piece of pump engineering rather than novel chemistry. The marshmallow-textured foam is genuinely satisfying and the formula is well-balanced for normal-to-oily skin, but the underlying alkaline soap base means sensitive types should look elsewhere.

Men's Skincare Charcoal Face Wash

A cheap, satisfyingly intense charcoal cleanser for oily-skinned men who like a high-foam, menthol-cool, deeply-stripped finish. It cuts oil well and costs almost nothing — but the formula is dated and harsh, leaning on sulfates, fragrance, menthol, parabens, and methylisothiazolinone, so dry or sensitive skin should steer well clear.

Pore Refining Bubbling Nose Mask

A genuinely clever update on the pore strip from the brand that invented it: a single-use nose mask whose glycolic-acid-and-fruit-enzyme gel bubbles up to loosen pore gunk, then flips to a silicone scrubber to sweep it away. It is fragrance-free and surprisingly gentle, with real, if temporary, pore-smoothing payoff. The catches are that it only treats the nose and works out pricey per single use.

Men's Oil Control Charcoal Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

The men's-sized, charcoal version of the strip Bioré made famous: a cheap, satisfying way to physically yank surface blackheads off your nose in 10 minutes, with genuinely visible results. It works at exactly that — and nothing more. The blackheads refill within days, it can irritate, and it does nothing to shrink pores or treat oil, so treat it as an occasional clean-out, not a real pore solution.

The Original Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

The 1997 original, essentially unchanged: a polyquaternium-37 film on a papery strip that sets on a wet nose over ten minutes and peels away with the oxidised plugs, sebaceous filaments and fine hairs it bonded to, which is instantly satisfying, fragrance-free, oil-free and cheap. It removes contents, not causes, the pores refill in one to two weeks, and the peel is the irritation; nearly nine hundred reviews at a middling 4.2 say exactly that, and a leave-on salicylic acid does the job better for less drama.

A no-frills hydrocolloid pimple patch that nails the narrow job it is built for: drawing the fluid out of a whitehead, protecting it, and stopping you from picking — all in an ultra-thin, near-invisible, fragrance-free dot you can wear day or night. Cheap, gentle, and FSA-eligible. Just know it only works on blemishes that have come to a head, not deep cystic ones.

Witch Hazel Ultra Strength Blackhead Remover Pore Strips

The iconic, oddly-satisfying pore strip in 'ultra strength' form — a patented adhesive that grips and lifts visible plugs from the nose for an instant, gratifying reveal. It genuinely, mechanically removes the top of blackheads and sebaceous filaments, but that's a temporary cosmetic fix: they refill within days, it doesn't treat the cause, and over-use risks irritation. Fun occasionally, with witch hazel and tea tree as token extras. An indulgence, not skincare.

More about Bioré

The Bioré skincare brand launched in Japan in 1980 under Kao Corporation, founded in 1887; it is backed by Kao's extensive surfactant and skin-science research, and its products are mass-market, dermatologist-tested formulations rather than prescription or clinical-trial-driven treatments.
