Natural, certified vegan and cruelty-free skincare brand with a focus on sustainability and transparency.

The story behind BYBI Read the full story

It started as a teaching project, not a product. The two co-founders met selling advertising, bonded over swapping processed food and conventional beauty for cleaner alternatives, and in 2015 launched a website to show people how to mix their own skincare at home. That content platform did something most blogs never do: it generated a publishing deal. Their how-to book on clean beauty went to auction in 2017, drew bids from every publisher pitched, and was won by Penguin, validating that there was real appetite for plain-language formulating advice.

The brand grew directly out of that audience. Rather than chase fear-based marketing, the founders positioned their line to lead with performance and ingredient education, explaining what an active does and why it belongs in a formula. The launch leaned on a small set of multitasking heroes, with a thick, do-everything balm for dry patches becoming the early signature and a calling card for the no-fuss, fewer-products ethos.

Ingredient transparency became the throughline. The brand made a point of demystifying buzzy actives in approachable terms, championing bakuchiol as a plant-derived alternative for people wary of retinol and treating clear concentration and sourcing information as part of the pitch. That educational instinct, carried over from the blog and the book, distinguished it in a category where many peers stopped at vague natural claims.

The operation scaled with outside backing and big-box reach: a multimillion-dollar funding round at the end of 2020 was followed by a major US mass-retail rollout, pushing a once-niche London project into thousands of doors. Sustainability sat alongside efficacy as a stated priority, including recyclable packaging and a facial oil marketed as carbon-negative. As a young, independent company, its credibility rests on well-studied ingredients and that founder-led transparency more than on long-run clinical data.

BYBI Babe Balm multipurpose balm in a jar Vegan Rescue Balm
BYBI moisturizer

Babe Balm

A genuinely pleasant, fully vegan multipurpose rescue balm that softens and protects dry, chapped skin head to toe, with a warm tropical scent and a nice antioxidant CoQ10-and-pequi accent. It's a lovely targeted salve — just understand it's an occlusive with no humectants, so it seals moisture rather than providing it, and the natural fragrance and coconut oil narrow its audience.

BYBI Supercharge Serum botanical face oil in a glass dropper bottle Omega-Rich Glow Oil
BYBI oil

Supercharge Serum

A genuinely high-quality botanical face oil masquerading under the 'serum' name — an omega-loaded blend anchored by rare echium and sacha inchi oils that nourishes, conditions and adds a real glow to dry, dull skin, all in a fast-sinking 'dry oil' texture. Lovely for the right skin; the essential-oil fragrance and oil-only nature mean it isn't for oily, reactive or actives-seeking users.

BYBI Mega Mist hydrating facial spray bottle Properly Hydrating Mist
BYBI toner

Mega Mist

A face mist that earns the name 'hydrating' rather than just borrowing it: real glycerin and hyaluronic acid plus soothing aloe and antioxidant botanicals, in a gentle base of floral waters rather than essential oils. It plumps and refreshes genuinely, and it's kinder to sensitive skin than most natural mists. The natural fragrance and the seal-it-or-lose-it nature of all mists are the only real caveats.

BYBI Bakuchiol Booster oil in a small glass dropper bottle Gentle Retinol Alternative
BYBI treatment

Bakuchiol Booster

About as clean and clever as a retinol alternative gets: 1% bakuchiol in 99% olive squalane, fragrance-free, mixable into any routine, and just $17. It delivers gentle, retinol-adjacent benefits without the irritation, sun sensitivity or layering headaches — ideal for sensitive skin and beginners. The only honest caveat is that bakuchiol's evidence base, while promising, is still younger than retinol's.

More about BYBI

BYBI Beauty was founded in 2017 in London by Elsie Rutterford and Dominika Minarovic, who met working in advertising before moving into formulation and clean-beauty content.

The brand is vegan, cruelty-free and plant-based, and grew out of the founders' Clean Beauty Co platform. BYBI is independently run and known for sustainability claims, including a carbon-negative facial oil, though its formulations rely on well-studied actives rather than long-term independent clinical validation.
