Bathtub ring, the gray scum that ordinary soap leaves clinging to porcelain, was one of the practical problems the original formula was engineered to solve. The chemistry came not from a beauty lab but from wartime work on gentle cleansers for damaged skin, and it was carried into commercial form largely by an American chemist working for the parent company's detergent arm. His insight was to abandon traditional soap entirely and build the bar from synthetic surfactants instead, which sidestepped the high-alkaline harshness and the residue that conventional soap produced, then fold in a generous load of moisturizing cream. That chemist's legacy is genuinely outsized: he left behind well over a hundred granted US patents, an unusually deep portfolio that underwrote not just the original bar but the technical credibility the brand traded on for decades. The marketing translated the science into one sticky, repeatable claim, that the product was not soap but a beauty bar containing a quarter moisturizing cream, summed up in the famous line that soap dries skin while this creams it. Adoption built in stages: real-women testimonials in 1969, an aggressive lean on professional skin recommendations through the late 1970s, and market leadership in its home category by the mid-1980s. The line then expanded relentlessly beyond the bar, into body washes, then hair and personal care, before a 2004 marketing project reframed the entire brand around a cultural conversation about beauty standards, spawning an offshoot focused on self-esteem two years later, a campaign that became a case study taught well outside cosmetics. The honest tension is that this conversation about authenticity runs inside a vast conglomerate whose other lines profit from exactly the standards the campaign questions, but the cleansing products themselves remain unusually mild, cheap, and well-formulated for what they are.
