The story behind Exuviance Read the full story

The whole story begins in a hospital, not a lab bench at a cosmetics company. Two researchers at Temple University in Philadelphia were chasing treatments for severe, scaling skin disease, testing formula after formula on patients struggling with dryness and thickened skin. When they hit on a mixture that worked, they at first made it by hand, then handed the recipe to nearby pharmacies to compound. That improvised supply chain was the embryo of an entire skincare category.

What the two doctors had stumbled onto was the therapeutic power of alpha hydroxy acids. In 1974 they co-authored the first published scientific paper on AHAs in dermatology, and a patent followed in 1975. Their research showed these acids could speed the skin's natural turnover and coax aged or damaged skin into renewing itself, a finding that quietly rewrote what topical skincare could promise. Over the following decades their work accumulated into more than a hundred patents and earned them the Dermatology Foundation's Discovery Award, recognition usually reserved for breakthroughs in treating disease.

The company they formed grew into a small family of brands. Exuviance became the consumer-facing line of acid serums, peels, and moisturizers, while its sibling NeoStrata served professional channels, all built on the founders' homegrown chemistry. The same team later pioneered polyhydroxy acids, gentler cousins of AHAs that exfoliate without the same sting, giving sensitive-skinned users a route into acid skincare. The business eventually passed to Johnson & Johnson's consumer arm, which has since spun off into the independent company Kenvue.

The quiet irony is that the brand that effectively invented the glow-acid category has spent years being outshone by louder, more heavily marketed acid lines. Its presentation reads clinical and a touch old-fashioned, but the provenance is unimpeachable. These founders didn't adopt the AHA story; they authored it, and the formulas still carry that authority.

Exuviance spf moisturizer

Skin Caring BB Fluid SPF 50

A cleverly formulated mineral tinted SPF that doubles as a gentle anti-aging treatment thanks to NeoStrata's signature polyhydroxy acids. The lightweight fluid texture and minimal white cast impressed, though the single universal shade and now-discontinued status limit its accessibility.

Exuviance exfoliant

Triple Microdermabrasion Face Polish

A genuinely innovative triple-mechanism exfoliant that delivers real at-home resurfacing results by combining professional-grade crystals, glycolic acid, and papaya enzyme in one treatment. The science is sound and the pedigree is impeccable, but the fragrance inclusion and aggressive combination limit its appeal to resilient, non-reactive skin types.

Exuviance eye cream

DePuffing Eye Serum

A scientifically sophisticated eye serum that targets puffiness through three distinct mechanisms — peptide-driven lymphatic drainage, caffeine vasoconstriction, and bioflavonoid capillary stabilization — but the $72 price tag for a thimble-sized 0.2 oz tube makes the cost-per-result equation brutally steep.

Exuviance exfoliant

Performance Peel AP25

A pedigreed at-home peel that delivers genuine clinical-grade exfoliation thanks to its three-acid formula and built-in neutralizer system. The results — smoother texture, brighter tone, tighter pores — are real, but the per-treatment cost and irritation potential keep it firmly in the enthusiast lane rather than the everyday essentials drawer.
