Iconic French professional skincare house behind the Hydradermie facial — France's leading salon brand, focused on results-driven anti-aging.

The story behind Guinot Read the full story

The brand exists because a chemical engineer wanted to help his wife do her job better. She worked as a beauty therapist, and he set out to supply her practice with something more effective than what was available — work that led him to a deceptively simple insight: deep-cleansing the skin first lets the active ingredients in creams penetrate far more effectively afterward. From there he experimented with gentle electrical stimulation to drive those actives in, and by the mid-1960s had perfected a multi-step ionization treatment that combined cleansing, electrode-assisted application and massage. Commercialized in the early 1970s as the Hydradermie machine, it became the first signature in-salon method of its kind and the foundation of the brand's professional reputation. The pivotal shift came when a pharmaceutical scientist took over leadership and turned a boutique supplier into an industrial skincare house. He built a franchise-and-certification model that required therapists to train before they could offer the treatments and restricted product sales to salons, a deliberate scarcity strategy that cemented the brand's prestige and tied its products to professional expertise. He also collaborated with a hospital burn-treatment specialist to develop the Cellular Life Complex, a concentrate of dozens of regenerating biological actives that became the engine behind flagship lines like the Longue Vie cellular creams. Over time the company grew into a salon empire spanning thousands of treatment rooms across roughly 70 countries and expanded into sister lines, including an aromatherapy-leaning brand and a professional color range. More recent work has continued the founder's preference for plant-derived alternatives, such as a passion-fruit-derived ingredient positioned as a retinol substitute. Throughout, the model has stayed consistent — professional in-salon treatments paired with home care, sold through trained estheticians rather than open shelves — and the brand states its formulas are not tested on animals.

Guinot spf moisturizer

Newhite Brightening Day Cream SPF 30

Guinot's Newhite Brightening Day Cream is one of the brand's most genuinely well-formulated products: a modern, photostable broad-spectrum SPF 30 paired with stable vitamin C and the Melanoxyl complex. Because daily sun protection is the real key to fading dark spots, building the SPF in is exactly right. The drawbacks are the usual Guinot ones — fragrance and a steep salon price — but the formula earns more respect than most of the line.

Guinot moisturizer

Longue Vie Cellulaire Cream

Guinot's Longue Vie Cellulaire is a decades-old salon anti-aging cream sold on its exclusive '56 biological actives.' Read the label honestly and it's a pleasant, rich, glycerin-and-emollient moisturizer whose famous cellular cocktail sits at trace levels at the very end of the formula, under a heavy classic fragrance. It hydrates and softens nicely; it does not, on any evidence, rejuvenate cells — and it costs $120.

Guinot Hydra Beaute comforting moisturizing cream, a French salon hydrator with shea butter, hyaluronic acid and allantoin for dehydrated skin Salon Hydration Cream

Hydra Beaute Comforting Moisturizing Cream

Guinot's Hydra Beaute is the brand's honest hydrator — a comforting, shea-and-hyaluronic-acid cream that genuinely relieves tight, dehydrated skin, without the elaborate 'cellular' marketing of its pricier siblings. It does its hydration job well. The drawbacks are familiar Guinot ones: added fragrance, a couple of questionable inclusions (benzophenone-3, dye), and a salon premium for a fairly basic formula.

Guinot eye cream

Longue Vie Yeux Eye Cream

Guinot's Longue Vie Yeux is the eye-area sibling of the brand's signature cellular cream, and it inherits both its character and its problems: pleasant hydration and a mild depuffing touch from horse chestnut, wrapped around the same trace-level '56 active' cocktail and a heavy fragrance. Fragrance near the eyes is the real misstep, and at a salon price for 15ml, value is hard to defend.

Guinot Masque Essentiel Nutri Confort, a rich French salon nourishing mask with lanolin, avocado and essential oils for dry skin Rich Dry-Skin Mask
Guinot mask

Masque Essentiel Nutri Confort

Guinot's Masque Essentiel Nutri Confort is a rich, old-school nourishing mask that genuinely comforts parched, dry skin in a 10-minute treatment — lanolin and conditioning oils do real work. But it's a relic in its irritant load: camphor, menthol, denatured alcohol, essential oils and lanolin make it a hard sell for anything but resilient, very dry skin, and the sensory tingle is dressing, not benefit.

More about Guinot

Guinot is a French professional skincare house founded in 1963, sold through salons.

The Newhite range targets pigmentation, and this day cream is one of its more genuinely well-formulated products — a modern photostable filter system with stable vitamin C — though it keeps the brand's fragrance and premium salon pricing.
