The man who built a men's-wellness empire trained as a classical cellist, playing hundreds of concerts across the United States and Europe — Carnegie Hall among them — before he ever thought about prescriptions. Andrew Dudum left Wharton without finishing, launched a nonprofit microlending platform for Middle Eastern entrepreneurs while still in school, then worked at a video-chat startup that was later acquired. In 2013 he co-founded a San Francisco venture studio, bankrolled by figures like Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen, that incubated companies internally — Bungalow, Homebound, and others — and provided the launchpad and capital for his own idea.
That idea grew from a blunt observation: his peers simply would not discuss hair loss or sexual health, and the men's-care market offered education almost nowhere. The fix was a sleek subscription storefront that paired licensed providers with the conditions men avoid mentioning, hair and intimacy first, dermatology folded in close behind. Stripping the awkwardness out of seeking treatment was the actual product; the creams were a consequence.
The company reached unicorn valuation by 2019 and later pushed aggressively into compounded GLP-1 weight-loss medication, a move that lifted annual revenue past a billion dollars while landing it in a high-profile dispute with Novo Nordisk over those compounded drugs. A political donation tied to the 2025 inauguration drew its own backlash. None of which is skincare, but all of which reveals the brand's true nature — a fast-moving health platform that happens to dispense retinoids.
That is also the honest caveat for the shelf. A phone-screen evaluation is lighter than an in-person derm visit, subscriptions are easier to start than to cancel, and the over-the-counter formulas are competent rather than distinctive. The genuine value sits on the prescription side, where actual clinicians stand behind the product.

More about Hims
Hims is the men's brand of Hims & Hers Health, founded in 2017 by Andrew Dudum, Jack Abraham, and Hilary Coles and publicly traded since 2021.
Its skincare spans over-the-counter formulas and, distinctively, prescriber-issued treatments delivered via telehealth, giving its clinical offerings a stronger evidentiary basis than typical direct-to-consumer brands.
