The story behind Ilia Read the full story

Ilia began with a graphic designer reading a label. Sasha Plavsic, who came from design rather than cosmetics, grew frustrated trying to find clean color products that actually performed, and in 2011 she launched Ilia from Vancouver with her brother Zachary — starting, fittingly for someone obsessed with packaging, in the lip category. The early tinted lip conditioners set the template for what the brand would become: makeup built like skincare, in objects that looked beautiful on a shelf.

Plavsic's contrarian thesis set Ilia apart in a crowded field. Rather than swearing off all synthetics, the brand argued that not every natural ingredient is good for skin and not every synthetic is bad — the goal was performance through a smart blend of both. It was, as the company likes to say, clean before clean was cool. The breakout came with the Super Serum Skin Tint, a skincare-makeup hybrid that landed in 2019 and sold more than a million units, helped triple the brand's sales, and arrived just ahead of the wave of serum foundations that followed. Other staples — the Limitless Lash mascara, the Multi-Stick, the Bright Start eye cream — filled out a full face.

In early 2022, Ilia was acquired by Famille C, the Courtin-Clarins family's holding company, which also owns Clarins, in what was that fund's first major purchase; Plavsic stayed on as chief creative officer and kept a stake. The brand had hit roughly a hundred million dollars in sales the prior year.

The honest read: Ilia genuinely delivers on its skincare-makeup premise. The Super Serum Skin Tint is a well-earned hero — light coverage, skin-loving actives, mineral SPF — and the brand's formulas are thoughtful and gentle enough for reactive skin. The trade-off is the obvious one for the category: this is clean prestige makeup at prestige prices, and the coverage is deliberately sheer, so anyone wanting full, matte, long-wear color should look elsewhere. For dewy, low-effort skin with benefits, it's one of the strongest options going.

Ilia sunscreen

C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

A genuinely ambitious hybrid that solves a real formulation problem: getting pure L-ascorbic acid to coexist with mineral zinc oxide SPF in one bottle, via microencapsulation. It delivers SPF 40, 10% vitamin C, and 2% niacinamide in a cushioned waterless serum-cream. The encapsulation tech is impressive and well-executed. The $64 price and 30ml size make the value math complicated.

Sun Serum Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

A genuinely well-built mineral SPF 50 — a substantial 10.5% zinc oxide plus iron oxides for visible-light protection, niacinamide, and a hydrating serum base. The iron oxides are a real, meaningful upgrade for pigmentation-prone skin, and the lightweight serum texture sheds the old mineral-sunscreen heaviness. Gentle, pregnancy-safe, and broadly suitable.

Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

The product that finally made mineral tinted SPF desirable instead of medicinal. At 12% non-nano zinc with iron oxide visible-light protection, niacinamide, and a squalane-based glowy finish, this bottle does the impossible — it delivers real sun protection, real skincare, and real makeup in a single step without any one of them feeling compromised. The $54 price stings, but almost nothing else in the category does all three jobs this well.

Ilia Blue Light Mist 50 mL clear glass spray bottle Hybrid Setting Mist + Antioxidants
Ilia treatment

Blue Light Mist

A pleasant hybrid of setting spray and antioxidant facial mist, with mastic gum for makeup-setting and Tara plus sunflower sprout extract for a claimed blue light defense. As a refreshing daytime hydrating mist it works well; as a blue light shield it is selling a story that runs ahead of the clinical evidence. The lavender oil rules out sensitive skin, and the price is steep.

The Cleanse Soft Foaming Cleanser

A genuinely gentle, pH-balanced foaming cleanser with a tight 13-ingredient list and a thoughtful glucoside-and-taurate surfactant system. It cleanses sunscreen and light makeup without the stripped, squeaky feel that signals barrier damage. The formulation is clean and competent — the main catch is the premium price relative to drugstore cleansers that do much the same job for a quarter of the cost.
