The story behind Kanebo Read the full story
Kanebo started not in a lab but in a silk mill. The parent company traces to 1887 as a cotton and textile firm, and it was a quiet observation on the factory floor, that workers handling silk had unusually soft hands, that pointed toward cosmetics. Kanebo formally entered the beauty business in 1936, debuting the Savon de Soie silk soap that drew on proteins from its textile heritage. The decades that followed were a run of Japanese firsts: an early hydrophilic cold cream in 1951, a mildly acidic lotion in 1952, an anti-aging cream in 1960, and an early home beauty device in 1967. Along the way Kanebo did pioneering work on oil-soluble vitamin C, water-soluble silk fibroin, and ingredients that stimulate the skin's own hyaluronic acid. That research engine spun off a family of brands, including the luxury flagship SENSAI plus KATE and LUNASOL. In 2006 the cosmetics business was acquired by the Kao Corporation, pairing more than a century of formulation heritage with the scale of one of Japan's largest consumer-goods companies, while the Kanebo name continues across roughly 50 markets.

More about Kanebo
Kanebo's cosmetics business launched in 1936, growing out of a Japanese textile company whose silk expertise seeded its first skincare.
Across the mid-20th century the brand introduced a string of Japanese firsts in skincare and pioneered work on silk-derived proteins and oil-soluble vitamin C. Kanebo Cosmetics was acquired by Kao Corporation in 2006 and now anchors a portfolio that includes SENSAI, KATE, and LUNASOL, giving it deep corporate R&D backing alongside its long heritage.
