Black-owned, eco-inclusive clean skincare built on botanical, high-performance formulas for all skin tones.

The story behind Klur Read the full story

Before she ever blended a serum, Lesley Thornton was holding brushes for other people's faces. She built an early career as a makeup artist, working with Laura Mercier and serving as a beauty director within the Estée Lauder world, and it was that vantage point that exposed the gap she'd eventually fill: she noticed how little genuine skin education sat underneath the glamour, and how rarely the luxury counter imagined someone who looked like her client base. A turning point came in 2003, when Liya Kebede became Estée Lauder's first Black spokesmodel — proof, to Thornton, that there was room for Black women at the top of prestige beauty.

She trained as an esthetician around 2010 and opened a private facial studio, treating clients one face at a time and mixing custom botanical preparations for their specific concerns. That hands-on practice became the laboratory for the line. What kept nagging at her was an absence she could name precisely: among the estheticians she knew, not one Black professional had a skincare line on the market.

The formulating philosophy she eventually settled on tried to hold two ideas at once — the results-driven actives you'd expect from a clinical treatment, and the soothing, plant-forward gentleness of natural care — rather than forcing a choice between them. The products are made domestically, with an emphasis on biodegradable, recyclable formulations, an extension of the same considered restraint that runs through the packaging.

What's worth understanding is that the line's authority is experiential and professional, drawn from years of treating real skin in a treatment room, not from a stack of published trials. For shoppers who value an esthetician's accumulated judgment and a deliberately spare, botanical approach, that's a meaningful credential — just a different kind than a lab dossier.

Klur Immersion Serum Concentrate dropper bottle, fragrance-free clean hydration serum with beta-glucan, hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, and green tea Sensitive Skin MVP
Klur serum

Immersion Serum Concentrate

A genuinely excellent fragrance-free hydration serum that proves clean and effective aren't opposites — beta-glucan, multi-weight hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, and stable vitamin C on a real green tea antioxidant base, gentle enough for sensitive skin yet legitimately active. The premium price and subtle results are the only real caveats; the formulation itself is hard to fault.

Klur Brilliant Light Serum bottle, a gentle multi-pathway brightening serum with 20% sodium ascorbyl phosphate, camu camu, alpha arbutin, licorice and squalane Gentle Multi-Brightener
Klur serum

Brilliant Light Serum

A genuinely sophisticated, gentle brightening serum that layers several mild pathways — 20% stable sodium ascorbyl phosphate, camu camu, alpha arbutin, and licorice — over barrier-supporting squalane and rosehip. It evens tone comfortably, even for sensitive skin, without a hint of sting. The catch is the $88 price and the patience gentle brighteners require.

Klur Gentle Matter Cleanser tube, a fragrance-free low-lather gel cleanser with green and white tea, ginkgo, centella and conditioning plant oils Botanical Antioxidant Cleanser
Klur cleanser

Gentle Matter Cleanser

A thoughtful, fragrance-free gel cleanser built on antioxidant teas and conditioning oils from a sustainability-minded indie — it cleans without stripping and feels considered. The honest caveats: it's premium-priced for a cleanser, and despite the clean-beauty framing it leans on an ammonium lauryl sulfate base, which is a slightly conventional choice.

More about Klur

Klur is an independent, Black-owned, Los Angeles-based clean skincare brand founded by licensed esthetician Lesley Thornton.

An earlier version sold under the name Klur Skin from around 2014 was pulled in 2016 for reformulation, and the brand relaunched in its current form in 2019. Its credibility rests on Thornton's esthetician background and an 'eco-inclusive botanicals' philosophy, and the brand has notably scaled without Sephora, Ulta, or outside investors, rather than on independent clinical research.
