The number in the name is a clue to the intent: "loved one," said out loud, is the whole pitch. Where most celebrity beauty launches chase a luxury aura, the line was built around a stubborn refusal to charge for the famous name attached to it. Nothing in the original six-piece lineup crossed fifteen dollars, and the products went to CVS and Walmart shelves rather than a department-store beauty hall.
The motivation traces to a gap the founder kept noticing: skin like his, and like that of the communities he comes from, tended to be an afterthought in formulation and shelf space alike. So the lineup leaned on ingredients with a long history in communities of color, shea butter, jojoba and coconut oils, alongside rosehip and sea buckthorn, and every product was calibrated to a pH range tuned for melanin-rich skin rather than a one-size-fits-all default. The whole range is unisex, vegan, cruelty-free, and free of sulfates, parabens, mineral oil and synthetic fragrance.
The brand was deliberately patient about coming to market, holding back until the team felt the offering was genuinely differentiated rather than another name-on-a-jar exercise. Its development partner specializes in talent-led personal-care brands aimed at underserved audiences, with a portfolio that also includes Naomi Osaka's Kinlo and Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade's Proudly, a stable that signals the strategy is mission-first rather than vanity. Since launch, distribution widened to Amazon and the marketing has stayed mass-market, sometimes featuring the founder's family, while the price discipline held.
The honest read: the formulas are sensible and gentle, not stacked with high-percentage actives, and as a young mass-retail brand it lacks deep independent clinical validation behind specific claims. But the clear focus and genuinely reachable pricing make it a credible entry point, especially for the skin it set out to serve.

More about Loved01
Founded in 2023 by John Legend with brand-builder A-Frame and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Naana Boakye, formulated for melanin-rich skin.
The dermatologist partnership lends credibility, but as a recent, affordable mass-market brand it has limited long-term track record and no deep independent clinical validation.
