MAOGEPING
More about MAOGEPINGThe story behind MAOGEPING Read the full story
In 1995, a Chinese television audience watched one actress play the same empress from girlhood at sixteen to old age at eighty, and much of the credit went to the man doing her face. That series, Wu Zetian, made Mao Geping a household name in China, which is an unusual career turn for someone who had started out training in Yue opera and only moved to the make-up table after a change in his voice ended his prospects as a singer.
In 2000 he turned that fame into a company carrying his name. Rather than chasing online sales, the business built its reputation the old-fashioned way, at staffed counters in upscale department stores, where beauty advisors apply the products on customers' faces. It grew into three linked businesses: colour cosmetics, skincare, and professional make-up training. The founder's own discipline shows in the product line, with complexion products at the centre and skincare designed largely around how make-up sits on the skin.
The commercial arc has been steep. Revenue nearly doubled between 2021 and 2023, and when the company listed in Hong Kong in December 2024, the retail portion of the offering was oversubscribed more than nine hundred times, making it one of the year's most sought-after listings and turning its founder into a billionaire on paper. Its best-known skincare items, including the Luxury Regenerating Black Cream and a caviar mask sold with its own application brush, lean hard on the language of luxury and regeneration.
The honest read separates the artistry from the chemistry. The textures are genuinely refined, often silicone-led and built to leave skin smooth and ready for foundation, which is exactly what a make-up house should be good at. But the brand has not published independent clinical studies of its skincare, the headline ingredients such as caviar, peptides and botanical retinol alternatives tend to appear low on the label, and fragrance is common. The prices are those of a prestige counter. For readers who value that experience, it can deliver pleasure; for anyone buying on regenerating claims, the evidence has yet to catch up with the jar.
