Mistine

For three straight years, one of the best-selling sunscreens in China wasn't Korean, Japanese, or French, it was Thai. Mistine, a homegrown Thai brand most Westerners have never heard of, topped China's sunscreen sales charts from 2021 onward, an improbable feat for a label that started by going door-to-door in Thailand decades earlier.

Mistine was founded in 1988 as the flagship brand of Better Way (Thailand), launched by Amornthep Deerojanawong, sometimes called Thailand's king of direct selling, in partnership with backers from a major Thai consumer-goods family. It began tiny, with fewer than ten employees and under a hundred products, at a time when Thais weren't accustomed to buying cosmetics through home sales presentations. The value-driven formula, solid quality at accessible prices, worked so well that direct selling came to dominate Thai cosmetics, and Mistine became the country's number-one beauty brand, eventually exporting to dozens of countries and now run by the founder's son.

Its second act came in China, entered in 2016 through a Shenzhen joint venture, where its sun-protection products, pitched around a tropical DNA suited to harsh sun, caught fire on e-commerce and racked up more than a billion RMB in early sales.

The honest read: Mistine's sunscreens deserve a real look, especially for the price. They're lightweight, affordable, and the brand has poured genuine R&D into sun protection, which is the one skincare category where formulation quality is non-negotiable. The caveat is regulatory: sunscreen standards and label claims differ between Thailand, China, the US, and the EU, so SPF and PA ratings aren't always directly comparable across markets, and Western shoppers may be buying imported product never assessed by their own regulators. The brand's enormous catalog also spans makeup, skincare, and fragrance of more variable distinction. As an affordable, R&D-backed sun-care specialist with a surprising global pedigree, though, Mistine is far more than a curiosity.
