The story behind Neal's Yard Remedies Read the full story

The brand owes its existence to a generous landlord and a wholefoods shop. Romy Fraser, a teacher and single mother of two, wanted to open an alternative apothecary in Covent Garden but lacked the means — until Nicholas Saunders, who ran London's first wholefoods store in the same cobbled yard, offered to split his premises and personally guarantee her bank loan. The shop she opened sold dried herbs, essential oils, Bach flower remedies and toiletries hand-blended at the back counter, and for its first years it traded under the name Neal's Yard Apothecary, dropped only when 'Apothecary' risked implying a registered pharmacy.

The cobalt-blue glass that became the brand's visual signature was a working decision, not a styling one: the dark pigment screens out sunlight that would otherwise degrade delicate plant extracts. The organic credentials behind those bottles were earned the hard way. The company stocked the UK's first certified-organic essential oils, and in 1991 became the first British health and beauty products certified by the Soil Association, later helping shape the standards the rest of the industry would follow and campaigning against plastic microbeads long before regulators caught up. Fraser's contribution was recognised with an OBE in 2008.

When the Kindersley family took the reins, they doubled down on the sustainability-first identity rather than diluting it, pushing toward carbon-neutral operation and recyclable glass packaging. The skincare that emerged leans on the same herbal logic — frankincense age-defying creams, the cult Wild Rose Beauty Balm, botanical night and hand creams handcrafted in small blends around essential oils and organically grown extracts. Read it for what it is: thoughtful, plant-led, genuinely values-driven skincare. Just keep the herbalism and the dermatology in separate boxes, and remember that essential-oil-rich formulas can provoke reactive skin.

Neal's Yard Remedies Frankincense Hydrating Cream jar, an organic hydrating moisturizer with frankincense, myrrh, plant oils, and hyaluronic acid Organic Frankincense Day-Night Cream
Neal's Yard Remedies moisturizer

Frankincense Hydrating Cream

The gentle, hydration-first member of Neal's Yard Remedies' frankincense range — a genuinely nice organic day-and-night cream that softens and comforts dry skin with quality plant oils, hyaluronic acid, and soothing calendula, carried by the brand's grounding frankincense-and-myrrh scent. It's more straightforwardly likable than the lift serum, with a lighter essential-oil load, though the resin oils still warrant a patch test on reactive skin.

Neal's Yard Remedies Bee Lovely Hand Cream tube, an organic honey and propolis hand cream with Brazil nut oil, hyaluronic acid, and a citrus scent Feel-Good Organic Hand Cream
Neal's Yard Remedies body care

Bee Lovely Hand Cream

A pleasant, affordable organic hand cream with a genuine feel-good factor — nourishing honey, propolis, Brazil nut oil, and hyaluronic acid in a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula, lifted by a bright citrus-honey scent and a charitable, bee-supporting story. It softens dry hands nicely; the citrus peel oil and fragrance allergens are the only reasons very sensitive skin should pause, and it isn't vegan.

Neal's Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm glass jar, a 99.6% organic multitasking rosehip and plant-oil balm with an aromatherapeutic essential-oil blend Cult Organic Multitasking Balm
Neal's Yard Remedies moisturizer

Wild Rose Beauty Balm

A genuine cult object — a 99.6% organic, multitasking rosehip-and-plant-oil balm that cleanses, masks, and moisturizes, leaving dry skin soft and glowing, beloved by beauty editors for two decades. Its lovely aromatherapeutic essential-oil blend is both the signature appeal and the main limitation: it carries multiple fragrance allergens that make it unsuitable for sensitive skin, and the beeswax means it isn't vegan.

Neal's Yard Remedies Wild Rose Glow Serum bottle, an organic radiance serum with wild rosehip oil, hyaluronic acid, a peptide, and an aromatic essential-oil blend Organic Rosehip Radiance Serum
Neal's Yard Remedies serum

Wild Rose Glow Serum

A pleasant organic radiance serum whose genuine strengths are hyaluronic hydration, organic rosehip glow, and a firming peptide, carried by the brand's signature rose-and-frankincense aroma. It leaves skin fresher and more luminous, though the glow is largely a hydration-and-rosehip effect rather than active brightening. The aromatic essential-oil blend, with its allergens, is the main reason sensitive skin should be cautious.

Neal's Yard Remedies Frankincense Intense Lift Serum bottle, an organic anti-aging serum with frankincense, hyaluronic acid, and plant oils Organic Frankincense Anti-Aging Serum
Neal's Yard Remedies serum

Frankincense Intense Lift Serum

A nicely formulated organic serum whose genuine strengths are hyaluronic hydration and a blend of quality plant oils, wrapped in the brand's aromatic frankincense ritual. The honest reality is that the headline 'lift' is a temporary acacia-gum film and the frankincense anti-aging benefit is tradition-based, not clinical. For organic-skincare lovers who want hydration and a nourishing experience it's lovely; as a proven lifting treatment at a luxury price, it overpromises.

More about Neal's Yard Remedies

Founded in 1981 in London and family-owned since 2006, Neal's Yard Remedies is a pioneer of certified-organic, ethically sourced beauty; its skincare rests on botanical and organic principles rather than clinical dermatological evidence, and the brand's wider remedy range has historically included homeopathy, which lacks scientific support.
