Olay
More about OlayThe story behind Olay Read the full story
Here is one of the strangest marketing decisions in beauty history: for years, Olay sold a product that never told you what it was. The packaging didn't call it a moisturizer, or even a cream — just a mysterious pink 'Beauty Fluid' in a heavy glass bottle, with nowhere on the label explaining what it actually did. The ambiguity was the point, and it worked.
The fluid was the invention of Graham Wulff, a former chemist who, in 1952 in Durban, South Africa, set out to make something better than the thick, waxy creams of the day that came packed in shoe-polish-style tins. He wanted a product that would moisturize and make his wife feel beautiful, and the result was that distinctive rose-colored emulsion. He named it Oil of Olay — a coined word riffing on lanolin, a key ingredient — and with marketing partner Jack Lowe turned it into an international curiosity. Quirks of localization meant it sold as Oil of Ulay in Britain and Oil of Ulan in Australia for decades.
The brand changed hands as it grew, passing to Richardson-Vicks in 1970, which capitalized the name and built out the line. Then in 1985 Procter & Gamble bought Richardson-Vicks for $1.2 billion, acquiring Olay in the bargain. P&G poured research and global distribution into it, simplified the name to plain Olay in 2000, and built the science-forward Regenerist franchise around niacinamide and peptides. By 2013 Olay was one of P&G's billion-dollar brands.
The honest read: Olay is a rare case of a mass brand with genuine R&D muscle. The Regenerist and niacinamide-led products punch well above their drugstore price, backed by real formulation science rather than just heritage. Not every launch is essential, and the marketing leans on anti-aging promises that should be read with realism — but for evidence-led actives at accessible prices, Olay remains one of the safest bets on the shelf.
