Origins
More about OriginsThe story behind Origins Read the full story
Decades before 'clean beauty' became a marketing category, one of the most establishment families in cosmetics decided to bet on nature. Origins arrived in 1990 as a plant-forward, 'powered by nature, proven by science' line — and it was the work of the Lauder dynasty, created by Leonard Lauder, son of the house's founder, with his son William leading the founding team and running it as its own enterprise.
The timing was deliberate. As consumer appetite for botanical, naturally derived products was rising, Origins set out to bring high-performance natural skincare into prestige department stores, opening its first store in Harvard Square in 1991. From the start it paired plant science with environmental ambition that ran ahead of the industry: it launched a tree-planting program that has put hundreds of thousands of trees in the ground, and pioneered an in-store empty-container recycling initiative when such gestures were rare.
The product catalog became a string of recognizable characters: a charcoal mask for clearer skin, a coffee-bean eye cream for tired eyes, a mushroom-based soothing line developed in a long-running collaboration with the integrative-medicine physician Dr. Andrew Weil, and a botanical anti-aging serum. Throughout, it has stayed inside its founding family's company as one of its original in-house brands, and is now fully vegan.
The honest read: Origins occupies an interesting middle ground — more naturally-derived and approachable than clinical heavyweights, more substantiated than pure 'natural' marketing, with the real R&D resources of a major beauty conglomerate behind it. Its formulas are pleasant and competent, and the sustainability commitments are longstanding rather than recently retrofitted. But it's a prestige brand, which means the price reflects positioning and packaging as much as performance, and 'powered by nature' is a philosophy, not a guarantee of superior results over simpler options. For someone who wants botanically-leaning prestige skincare from a company with deep formulation muscle and a genuine green track record, it's a solid, grown-up choice — just not a budget one.
