The story behind Oui the People Read the full story

As a child in Guyana, Karen Young watched her uncles shave with single-blade safety razors, a brush, cream, one blade, and marveled at their skin: no razor burn, no ingrown hairs. Decades later, an executive at a major beauty company and battling chronic razor burn herself, she realized the elegant tool her uncles used had quietly been coded as a men's-luxury object, while women were sold disposables that left their skin raw. With about $1,500 from her Brooklyn apartment, she set out to change that.

Young launched the brand in 2015, originally as "OUI Shave," around a single product: a weighted, German-made single-blade safety razor designed for the people who actually struggle most with shaving, those with coarse, curly hair and sensitive skin. It sold out repeatedly and won a stack of beauty awards. After a non-binary customer thanked her for a brand that did not presume its shoppers' gender, Young renamed it Oui the People, a play on "we the people" and an inclusivity ethos that became central to the brand's identity, including a stated commitment to drop loaded words like "flawless" from its marketing.

From that one razor, the line expanded into body care, a much-loved hydrating body serum, a shave gel-to-milk that has sold out many times over, ingrown-hair toners, and bath soaks, and earned a place on major retail shelves as a notable Black-owned beauty brand.

The honest read: the founding insight is genuinely good. Women's shaving tools were objectively worse, a single, sharp blade really does reduce irritation for many people, and the brand's careful, non-shaming language is a refreshing change rather than empty positioning. Credit where due. The caveats are gentle: this is premium-priced body care, the serums and soaks are pleasant enhancements rather than clinical essentials, and a beautiful razor still requires good technique to deliver on its promise. For someone tired of disposable-razor irritation who also appreciates a brand with a conscience, Oui the People is an easy, satisfying recommendation; just buy the hero tools first and treat the rest as the lovely extras they are.

Oui the People Featherweight Hydrating Body Gloss, a lightweight fast-absorbing body oil with squalane and antioxidant seed oils Lightweight Glow Body Oil
Oui the People body care

Featherweight Hydrating Body Gloss

A genuinely lovely featherweight body oil that brings facial-skincare-quality plant oils to the body: squalane plus antioxidant rosehip, pomegranate, and pumpkin seed oils that absorb fast and leave a soft, healthy glow without greasiness. It's elevated, effective body hydration. The main caveat is the fragrance, which fragrance-sensitive skin should weigh, and it's a modest premium over basic body oils.

Oui the People Sugarcoat Moisturizing Shave Gel-to-Milk, an oil-rich nourishing shave gel with botanical oils and vitamin C Treatment-Grade Shave Gel
Oui the People body care

Sugarcoat Moisturizing Shave Gel

A genuinely clever, nourishing shave product that treats shaving as skincare: an oil-rich gel-to-milk formula that lubricates the razor for a close, low-irritation shave while conditioning skin with botanical oils, glycerin, soothing aloe, and a vitamin C touch. Skin comes out moisturized, not stripped. The main caveats are the fragrance — applied to freshly-shaved skin — and a premium price for a shave product.

Oui the People All In All Melting Body Balm jar, a rich vegan melting body balm with dual shea butters, sea fennel plant-retinol-alternative, and adaptogenic mushroom Elevated Melting Body Balm
Oui the People body care

All In All Melting Body Balm

A genuinely rich, well-made melting body balm that treats body care like skincare — dual shea butters for deep nourishment, plus a gentle plant-based retinol alternative (sea fennel) and an adaptogenic mushroom aimed at smoother, more elastic skin. It melts in beautifully and softens dry, rough areas, with a premium price and the modest, emerging evidence behind the retinol-alternative claim as the main caveats.

Oui the People Resurfacing Body Serum, a multi-acid body exfoliant with glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids for texture and dark spots Multi-Acid Body Exfoliant
Oui the People body care

Resurfacing Body Serum

A genuinely effective, face-grade multi-acid body exfoliant — glycolic, lactic, salicylic, and a PHA — that smooths rough, bumpy skin like keratosis pilaris and gradually fades body dark spots, with soothing actives to soften the intensity. It works. The honest caveats are the multi-acid irritation profile, added citrus oils, and the daily-sunscreen requirement, which make it a deliberate treatment rather than a casual lotion.

Oui the People toner

The Big Reveal PHA Ingrown Relief Toner

A genuinely well-targeted, fragrance-free PHA toner that does one common, under-served job well: gently clearing ingrown hairs and razor bumps on the delicate bikini line and underarms. By choosing the gentlest acid (gluconolactone) over harsher ones, it stays comfortable on sensitive, freshly-shaved skin while still working. Effective, broadly suitable, and clean — with consistency and a mid-premium price the only real notes.

More about Oui the People

Founded in 2015 around a single-blade safety razor designed for women; the core insight and tools are well-reviewed, but the broader body-care range carries no notable independent clinical validation and sits at a premium price.
