The story behind Ourself Read the full story

Before they were trying to plump lips without a needle, the people behind this brand had already built two of the professional-grade skincare lines dermatologists keep in their dispensaries. Scott Glenn and Lauren Otsuki are the duo who founded SkinMedica, the growth-factor pioneer, and later Alastin Skincare, the post-procedure favorite of cosmetic practices, alongside a string of pharmaceutical ventures aimed at infertility, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. That second career, building complex molecules that actually have to reach a target inside the body, is the real backstory here. Their thesis was that the limiting factor in topical skincare isn't the ingredient but the journey: most active molecules simply sit on the surface, too large or too fragile to travel anywhere useful. The proprietary answer became a portfolio of bio-engineered "intelligent peptides," or Intides, paired with a layered capsule system meant to ferry hyaluronic acid and peptides past the outermost barrier. Paired with marketer Vimla Black-Gupta, who took the president's seat, the founders framed the whole enterprise as clinical skincare's comeback after years of minimalist, feel-good branding dominating shelves. Venture capital agreed quickly: roughly thirty million dollars flowed in from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners and First Round Capital, an unusually large early raise for a beauty newcomer and a sign that the technology story carried weight beyond the cosmetics press. The flagship lip product anchors a range extending into pigmentation, firming, and sun care, with prices that climb into procedure-adjacent territory. The honest tension is that pedigree and delivery science, however genuine, still can't make a swipe-on serum equal an injection. What the founders' track record does buy is credibility that the engineering is real, not the marketing flourish it might be from less proven hands.

More about Ourself

Launched in 2022 by biotech and medical-device entrepreneurs under parent company Glo Pharma, Ourself is a science-forward brand built on a patented subtopical delivery technology.

Its formulas are positioned as at-home alternatives to procedures, but independent long-term clinical validation remains limited and its products are not equivalent to in-office injectables.
