Trace the lineage back far enough and you reach candles. The company that eventually made PanOxyl started in 1847 Germany as a soap-and-candle maker founded by John David Stiefel, and within a few years it had drifted toward medicated soaps. A grandson, August Stiefel, carried the business to the United States in 1910, and by 1914 the Stiefel Medicinal Soap Company was turning out more than a hundred different therapeutic and cosmetic bars. That soap-first dermatology is the unlikely root system beneath a viral acne wash.
The pivot from soap to serious acne chemistry came in 1966, when Stiefel released Sulfoxyl Lotion, an early benzoyl-peroxide-and-sulfur treatment that helped establish the company as a dermatology specialist rather than a soap house. PanOxyl grew out of that expertise, and Stiefel built it into a clinic-counter staple respected by prescribers long before any consumer marketing existed.
Its ownership history reads like a map of pharmaceutical consolidation. GlaxoSmithKline bought Stiefel in 2009 for roughly $2.9 billion, folding the dermatology portfolio into a global drug company where a humble acne wash was a rounding error. Around 2012, frustrated customers reported difficulty sourcing the product during that corporate transition, a quiet preview of the supply crunches the brand would later face for the opposite reason. Late in 2018 the heritage line landed with a dedicated dermatology owner that gave it modern formulas and packaging.
The foaming wash's eventual social-media moment worked precisely because nothing under the cap was new. Reviewers were not discovering an ingredient; they were rediscovering one with nearly six decades of clinical track record behind it. The brand's expansion into companion moisturizers reflects a hard-won lesson from that history: the active works, but it punishes skin that is not buffered against its drying edge.
