The story behind Pechoin Read the full story

The name itself is a small poem: characters evoking a hundred birds paying homage to the phoenix, chosen by a man who walked away from a Shanghai department-store job to gamble on cosmetics. Gu Zhimin's bet paid off spectacularly, and his vanishing cream, packed into a round tin painted blue and yellow, became a fixture on the vanities of Shanghai's golden age, reportedly favored by powerful society women who passed it to the wives of foreign diplomats, and by screen idols of the era. Gu stayed on after 1949's political upheaval and died of a heart attack in 1956, leaving his wife and son to carry the company forward.

Then the world it was built for vanished. In the early 1990s, an inrush of glossy foreign brands made the old tin look hopelessly dated; the parent business slid into bankruptcy, and the trademark was scooped up by a Hong Kong buyer for a reported 500,000 yuan before a 2000 restructuring put it on private footing. For years it survived more as memory than as a market force.

The resurrection came from leaning into the very nostalgia that had nearly killed it. Riding a wave of national pride in homegrown heritage, the brand spun its Republican-era roots into an asset, most famously through a long-form animated short following an elegant lady spy through a stylized 1930s Shanghai that drew well over a hundred million views and reintroduced the name to people who had never met their grandmother's cream. Sales climbed into the billions of yuan, putting it among the country's largest beauty players. It still sells that original balm in something close to its original packaging, an anchor of comfort that doubles as the brand's entire argument: the tin you trust, retold for an audience that wasn't alive when it first sold out.

Broadly suitable and pleasant, it does the job of a good hydrating essence, with the honest caveat that it's a prep step to be sealed with moisturizer, and fragrance the main note.

Pechoin Moisturizing Balm in its iconic round tin, a heritage Chinese protective balm for dry and cold-weather skin Heritage Protective Balm
Pechoin moisturizer

Moisturizing Balm

A near-century-old heritage balm from the brand widely called China's first skincare line, and for a couple of dollars it does the simple job of sealing in moisture and protecting dry skin against cold and wind genuinely well. It's a nostalgic, reliable protector rather than a treatment — fragranced, occlusive, and best for dry skin in winter, with limited modern ingredient transparency the main caveat.

Pechoin Youth-Revitalizing Activating Cream 50 g green-to-white gradient glass jar on a light background Shanghai Heritage Peptide Cream
Pechoin moisturizer

Youth-Revitalizing Activating Cream

A surprisingly complete peptide-and-niacinamide cream from Shanghai's oldest skincare house, with five peptides, adenosine, ectoine and three hyaluronic acid fractions in a rich silicone-and-olive-oil base. The formula would hold its own against Western creams at twice the yuan price. The catches are practical: fragrance, a dye and grain proteins for reactive skin, a texture too rich for oily faces, and no reliable way to buy it in the US at a known price.

Pechoin Men's Hydrating Cleansing Cream 100 g tube Old-School Soap Wash, Herbal Label
Pechoin cleanser

Men's Hydrating Cleansing Cream

A classic East Asian foaming cleansing cream in a men's-range tube: four fatty acids and potassium hydroxide making a dense potassium soap, softened by a taurate surfactant and a lot of glycerin, then dressed in charcoal, goji, dendrobium and a tail of amino acids. It de-greases oily skin thoroughly and cheaply, feels tight on anything else, and its herbal and charcoal claims are packaging. Fine for oily faces in summer; wrong for dry ones any time.

Pechoin cleanser

Skin Source Translucent Moisturizing Purifying Wash Foam

A dense, satisfying soap-foam cleanser from China's oldest skincare house, softened with amino-acid surfactants and dressed in a herbal trio, that cleans oily skin thoroughly for very little money. The alkaline base, added fragrance, two dyes and lauramide DEA make it a poor fit for dry or sensitive skin despite the barrier-friendly marketing.

Pechoin Youth-Revitalizing Essential Toner 90 mL bottle Peptide-Loaded Essence Toner
Pechoin toner

Youth-Revitalizing Essential Toner

A milky essence sold as a toner that carries more active chemistry than most Western serums at three times the price: niacinamide fifth on the list, six peptides, four hyaluronic acid forms, two ferments, ectoine, adenosine and reishi. It leaves skin silky and brighter at once and evens tone over a month; the peptide and ferment promises are subtler and rest on Pechoin's own lab. A fragrance and a yellow dye are the price of the price.

Pechoin Youth-Revitalizing Repairing Eye Cream 20 g green-to-silver gradient tube on a light background Heritage-Brand Peptide Eye Balm
Pechoin eye cream

Youth-Revitalizing Repairing Eye Cream

A balm-weight eye cream built on shea butter and silicones with niacinamide, adenosine and a single peptide, from a Shanghai brand that has learned modern anti-aging chemistry. It relieves dry, tight under-eyes at once and can soften fine lines modestly over a month. It is fragranced, which is a poor idea near the eye, the peptide dose is light, and outside China it is sold under two names at prices nobody can pin down.

More about Pechoin

Founded in 1931 as China's first domestic skincare brand; its appeal rests on heritage, nostalgia, and herbal tradition rather than published independent clinical research, and the modern 'science-meets-herbs' positioning is largely marketing.
