Plum

An image of mascara being tested on caged rabbits is the kind of thing that lodges in your head and won't leave. For Shankar Prasad, it became a career pivot. An IIT Bombay chemical engineer who had passed through Hindustan Unilever, McKinsey, and the investment world at Everstone Capital, he went looking for cruelty-free cosmetics in India and ran straight into a void: no meaningful regulation against animal testing, and the only dependably cruelty-free shelf belonging to Ayurvedic products. The gap was the opportunity.
His answer leaned hard on a single conviction, that 'goodness' should be a formulation principle rather than a tagline. Early ranges centered on green tea, with the Green Tea Renewed Clarity Night Gel becoming an emblem of the approach: light, non-comedogenic, plant-forward, priced for an Indian millennial who wanted efficacy without the guilt. Rather than chase one viral hit, Plum grew the line outward into accessible vitamin C, niacinamide, and barrier basics, building a catalog deep enough to anchor a daily routine.
The business arc tracked India's direct-to-consumer boom almost exactly. Plum scaled from an online-first label into physical retail across hundreds of Indian towns, attracted institutional backing that eventually included a Series C round valuing the parent near a quarter-billion dollars, and spun up sibling brands such as the men's grooming line Phy. Through it all, ownership and product direction stayed with a founder who can actually read a spec sheet.
The fair read separates mission from mechanism. The pioneering vegan stance and the patient, values-first build are genuine, and the formulas are sensibly constructed for the money. But the 'toxin-free' framing is values-signaling more than dermatological differentiation, conventional formulas aren't actually toxic, and growth has leaned heavily on influencer reach. As affordable, ethical, competently formulated everyday skincare, Plum delivers exactly what it promises, without pretending to be a clinical powerhouse.
