Queen Marie of Romania did not set out to become a beauty spokeswoman. She visited the United States in 1923, liked the creams enough that she wrote in 1925 asking for more, and an ad agency turned her letter into one of the most consequential marketing pivots in cosmetics history. Facing slumping sales in 1922, the brand's agency J. Walter Thompson chased testimonials from European royalty and American society women, eventually assembling endorsements from three reigning queens, half a dozen princesses, and a parade of titled ladies including the Duchess of Leinster. Between 1923 and the 1929 crash, cream sales climbed nearly seventeen percent a year, and the aspirational-celebrity playbook the whole industry now runs on was effectively born here.
The twin products powering all that prestige arrived in 1904: a cold cream and a vanishing cream that converted a witch-hazel wound remedy into a cosmetics empire. The company had incorporated as the Pond's Extract Company in 1914, briefly tried whimsical mascots named Peter and Polly Ponds in the early 1920s, then abandoned them once real duchesses proved far more persuasive.
The corporate arc that followed broadened distribution dramatically. A 1955 merger created Chesebrough-Pond's, placing the creams alongside Cutex nail polish and Matchabelli perfumes and pushing them into American supermarkets.
Where the brand thrives today is geography the founders never imagined. Its largest markets now sit in Asia and Spain, with deep penetration in India, Japan, and Thailand, where the name carries household-staple weight that has long since eclipsed its New York pharmacy origins. The modern relevance lives in that everyday mass-market familiarity abroad far more than in any cutting-edge formulation at home.

More about Pond's
Founded in 1846 and owned by Unilever since 1987, Pond's is one of the world's oldest skincare brands; its core products (Cold Cream, Vanishing Cream) are heritage cosmetic staples rather than clinically studied actives, and some regional lines emphasize skin-brightening claims that have drawn criticism.
