The story behind Ranavat Read the full story

Michelle Ranavat's path to founding a skincare brand began with a personal crisis: after the birth of her child in 2016, she experienced severe postpartum hair loss, and the only remedy that worked was an Ayurvedic oil from India. A first-generation Indian American raised in Wisconsin, she had reconnected with her heritage during a 2010 trip to Jaipur, and that combination of personal results and cultural pull led her to launch RANAVAT in 2017. Drawing on her father's pharmaceutical business in India, she built a luxury line whose formulas are made there using slow, traditional Ayurvedic methods and developed alongside Ayurvedic doctors and chemists. The brand became widely described as the first South-Asian-founded Ayurvedic skincare brand to reach the US market, and it earned shelf space at prestige retailers like Cult Beauty while picking up industry recognition. Its products, spanning serums, oils, balms and a mineral sunscreen, lean on botanical actives like saffron and traditional preparation techniques. As a luxury brand rooted in heritage and ritual, RANAVAT's authority comes more from its Ayurvedic lineage and craftsmanship story than from a large body of independent peer-reviewed research.

Ranavat sunscreen

Daily Brightening Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 50+

A luxury mineral sunscreen that pulls off the hard trick — 12.3% non-nano zinc with no white cast — and layers a saffron-licorice-turmeric brightening complex underneath. The protection is legitimate and the finish is beautiful on normal-to-dry skin. The rose scent and the $65 price are the two things standing between it and a universal recommendation.

Ranavat Firming Bakuchi Serum bottle Bakuchiol With a Fragrance Catch

Firming Bakuchi Serum

Ranavat's Firming Bakuchi Serum is a genuinely decent anti-aging serum built around a real active — bakuchiol, an evidence-backed, gentle retinol alternative — supported by niacinamide, peptides, a ceramide, hyaluronic acid, and Ayurvedic botanicals. So it offers real, gentle anti-aging, smoothing, and barrier support. But it's undercut by two things: it contains rose and geranium essential oils (fragrance allergens), an own-goal in a serum whose whole appeal is being gentle enough for sensitive skin, and at $145 for 30 ml it's a luxury price when effective bakuchiol serums cost a fraction. Add marketing flourishes ('8 peptides,' 'vegan growth factors') and whole bakuchi oil that can photosensitize, and you get a real bakuchiol serum held back by fragrance and price.

Ranavat Brightening Saffron Hydrating Foaming Cleanser Luxe Gentle Ayurvedic Cleanser
Ranavat cleanser

Brightening Saffron Hydrating Foaming Cleanser

Ranavat's Brightening Saffron Cleanser is a genuinely lovely, gentle cleanser with a silky gel-to-milk lather and a non-stripping glucoside base that leaves skin soft and comfortable. That gentleness is real and worthwhile. But its 'brightening' promise runs into one stubborn fact: it's a rinse-off cleanser, so the saffron, niacinamide, turmeric, and astaxanthin wash away in seconds and can't meaningfully brighten. It also contains rose flower oil (a natural essential oil), so it isn't truly fragrance-free, and at $45 it's premium for what is functionally a gentle cleanser. Enjoy it as a luxe, gentle wash and get your actual brightening from leave-on products.

More about Ranavat

Founded in 2017 by Michelle Ranavat, RANAVAT is a luxury Ayurvedic skincare brand whose botanically rich formulas are produced in India using traditional, time-intensive techniques.

Often cited as the first South-Asian-founded Ayurvedic skincare brand to launch in the US, its positioning blends heritage ritual with modern chemistry; its claims rest on Ayurvedic tradition, the founder's family pharmaceutical background and brand development rather than extensive independent clinical trials.
