The story behind RMK Read the full story

RMK takes its initials from its founder, Japanese makeup artist Rumiko Hirose, whose work bridged the New York editorial scene and Japanese beauty technology. The brand opened its first counter in March 1997 at the Seibu department store in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, launching with two products that would define it: an RMK make-up base and a liquid foundation built around a natural, translucent, dewy finish. That focus on luminous, bare-looking skin became RMK's signature and made it a fixture of the Japanese prestige base-makeup category. The brand sits within the corporate family of E'quipe and Kanebo, the historic Japanese cosmetics house that became part of Kao Corporation in 2006, giving RMK the manufacturing depth of one of Japan's largest beauty conglomerates. Alongside its color cosmetics, RMK offers skincare and sun care, including cleansing balms, milky essences and high-SPF face protectors, though the brand's core identity and reputation remain rooted in complexion makeup rather than treatment skincare. Its credibility rests on nearly three decades on the Japanese prestige market and the resources of its corporate parent, rather than on independent clinical validation of individual skincare formulas.

RMK sunscreen

UV Face Protector SPF50+/PA++++

A refined Japanese SPF50+/PA++++ face sunscreen built by a makeup-artist brand to live under foundation. Its filter set, zinc oxide plus the modern UVA filters Tinosorb S and Uvinul A Plus, gives it genuinely strong broad-spectrum coverage, and the gel-cream texture grips makeup beautifully. Alcohol and royal jelly mean dry and sensitive skin should approach with care.

Smooth Milk Essence

A milk-type hydrating essence that stands out by carrying skin-identical barrier lipids, hydrogenated lecithin and cholesterol, alongside humectants and mango butter, wrapped in RMK's signature milk-tea scent. It's a genuinely comforting barrier-support layer for dry and normal skin, but the fragrance rules out sensitive types and grey-market pricing dents the value.

W Treatment Oil 50ml

An elegantly built Japanese biphase oil that shakes together a fast-absorbing squalane layer and a glycerin hydrating layer for softened, plumped skin. The seven-oil blend and signature floral-citrus scent make it a genuine pleasure for dry, normal skin in colder months. The luxury price and assertive fragrance are the catch, and oily or sensitive skin should look elsewhere.

Cleansing Balm

A polished J-beauty melting cleansing balm that does its one job well — a lightweight oil-and-wax base with avocado, jojoba and grapeseed oils and a built-in emulsifier that dissolves makeup and sunscreen, then rinses clean without a greasy film. The honest limits are a soft rose fragrance (with citronellol and geraniol), that it isn't fungal-acne safe, and a premium price for a very well-made oil cleanser. Lovely for resilient skin that enjoys a scented ritual.

More about RMK

Launched in 1997 by Japanese makeup artist Rumiko Hirose, RMK is a Tokyo-based prestige beauty brand blending New York makeup artistry with Japanese formulation.

It is owned by E'quipe, part of Kanebo, which falls under the Kao Corporation umbrella following Kao's 2006 acquisition of Kanebo. The brand is best known for base makeup, with skincare positioned as a supporting range rather than a clinically validated treatment line.
