RoC
More about RoCThe story behind RoC Read the full story
The name is a contraction hiding in plain sight: Ro from Rogé, C from Cavaillès, the Paris pharmacy where a young chemist spent the early 1950s mixing fragrance-free creams for customers whose skin reacted to everything else on the shelf. That problem-solving impulse, not anti-aging ambition, is what actually launched the company. Lissarrague had already invented the idea of the hypoallergenic formula before he ever stabilized a vitamin: every product had to be scent-free, tested under dermatologist supervision in laboratories and hospitals, and built only from a vetted shortlist of roughly 250 pre-approved raw materials. The pharmacy-standard rigor came first; the marquee retinol breakthrough grew out of it.
That ethos produced a run of quiet firsts most shoppers never connect to the label. The lab developed an early broad-spectrum UV filter system in the 1960s, well before sun protection was a mass habit, and later cracked the puzzle of keeping retinol potent in a jar by pairing it with antioxidants like vitamin E and shielding it in opaque, air-limiting packaging. The Retinol Correxion family that resulted made over-the-counter retinol a genuine drugstore category rather than a prescription-only privilege, and its night creams, eye treatments, and deep-wrinkle serums still anchor the catalog.
For decades the brand sat somewhat dormant inside a giant healthcare portfolio, its heritage underused. The revival pitch leaned hard on what was always true: that the retinol know-how was real engineering, not a slogan. Today the line keeps stretching that expertise into barrier-repair cleansers, gel-to-foam textures, hydration sticks, and gentler delivery systems aimed at newcomers who find prescription retinoids intimidating. The through-line from a 1950s pharmacist measuring out fragrance-free balm to a shelf of stabilized retinol serums is remarkably unbroken: solve an irritation problem first, then let the actives do their work.
