The story behind Rodan + Fields Read the full story

Rodan + Fields is the rare brand its own founders had to buy back. Dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, who met during their Stanford residency in 1984 and went on to create Proactiv in 1995, founded the brand in 2000 and launched it through department stores in 2002. A major beauty conglomerate acquired it in 2003, but as retail foot traffic softened the founders came to regret the sale, repurchased the company in 2007, and relaunched it in 2008 on an entirely different model.

That model was multi-level marketing. Instead of shelves, Rodan + Fields sold through a network of independent consultants marketing directly to friends, family, and social-media followers, organized around regimens for anti-aging, acne, and brightening such as Redefine, Reverse, and Unblemish. The approach drove the brand past a billion dollars in annual sales and made it one of the most visible direct-sales names in beauty.

It also drew sustained criticism. Detractors argue the structure functions like a pyramid, with most participants earning little once costs are accounted for, a charge common to the MLM category. The brand also faced class-action litigation over its Lash Boost eyelash serum, tied to reports of eye irritation, which was settled. In 2024 the company announced a pivot away from multi-level marketing toward an affiliate-based, direct-to-consumer model.

The honest read is that the formulations themselves are sound; these are legitimate dermatologists who designed competent regimens, and the products have real, satisfied customers. The substantive criticism is about the business model and pricing rather than the chemistry, since historically a large share of the cost funded the sales network rather than the formulas, and "dermatologist-developed" carries marketing weight that is not the same thing as broad independent clinical evidence. Judge the products on their ingredients and your own results, and weigh the purchase model separately.

More about Rodan + Fields

Founded in 2000 by two practicing dermatologists, the same pair behind Proactiv, so the clinical pedigree is real, but the regimens rest largely on founder authority and proprietary studies rather than broad independent literature, and the long-running multi-level-marketing model has drawn sustained scrutiny.
