The story behind Ryo Read the full story

The parent company's hair care research reaches back to the 1950s and a product called ABC Pomade, a hair grease made from natural ingredients and sold in a country then rebuilding itself. That is a long institutional memory to bring to a shampoo, and it shows in how methodically this brand was constructed.

Launched in 2008, it was built on hanbang, the Korean herbal medicine tradition, and specifically on the proposition that a scalp is treated the way the tradition treats any other tissue, with formulations of characterised botanicals rather than single actives. The anti-hair-loss line draws on ingredients including scutellaria, liquorice and biota seed. The positioning worked domestically to an unusual degree, taking the brand past forty percent of the Korean herbal shampoo market and holding the top position in that segment for years, before expanding into Japan in 2012 and Taiwan in 2014.

One piece of regulatory context makes the claims easier to read. In South Korea, anti-hair-loss shampoo is a defined functional cosmetic category with an approved ingredient list and a formal notification process, which is a meaningfully higher bar than the unregulated hair-growth claims common in Western markets. It is still not a drug approval, and the distinction matters.

The honest read is that this is a well-made, pleasant and genuinely scalp-focused range with more structure behind its claims than most botanical hair care, and that structure should not be mistaken for evidence of hair regrowth. Functional cosmetic status attests that an approved ingredient is present at a specified level, not that the product will reverse androgenetic alopecia, and no shampoo left on a scalp for two minutes is going to do what a daily topical drug does. As scalp care and as a shampoo, it performs. As a treatment for progressive hair loss, it is an adjunct at best, and the underlying condition deserves a proper assessment.

More about Ryo

Ryo launched in 2008 under Amorepacific, whose hair care research dates to the 1950s, and became the leading brand in South Korea's herbal shampoo segment.

Its anti-hair-loss products sit within Korea's regulated functional cosmetic framework, which specifies approved ingredients but is not equivalent to drug approval for hair regrowth.
