Spanish dermocosmetics laboratory pioneering liposomal, nanotech-delivered skincare.

The story behind Sesderma Read the full story

The pharmacy counter where Gabriel Serrano grew up shaped the company long before the laboratory existed. His grandfather ran a pharmacy in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and his father practiced as a family doctor, so medicine and compounding were the family trade. At nineteen he left for Spain to study, eventually earning a doctorate in dermatology, and in 1976 he opened his own clinic in Valencia. It was there, treating patients, that he ran repeatedly into the same wall: the actives he wanted to prescribe existed, but the products carrying them barely penetrated the skin.

That clinical frustration, not a marketing brief, is what produced the laboratory in 1989, founded alongside its professional sister brand Mediderma. Serrano's fixation on the delivery problem led to the company's defining bet on liposomes, microscopic lipid spheres that wrap an active and ferry it past the skin's barrier. The approach reached full expression in 2008, when Sesderma rolled out complete lines built on nanotechnology-scale encapsulation, a genuine technical leap that let unstable or poorly absorbed ingredients work harder at lower irritation.

That engineering shows up across the range as a consistent philosophy rather than a slogan. Liposomal vitamin C in the C-Vit serum, encapsulated azelaic and tranexamic acid in Azelac RU, and the glycolic Acglicolic line all exist to solve penetration first and concentration second; the company even claims its liposomal azelaic acid outperforms the free acid by a meaningful margin. More recent work extends the idea into novel carriers such as chitosan-coated liposomes used in sun protection.

The payoff for shoppers is a pharmacy brand whose science is the product, not the packaging. The trade-off is that proprietary encapsulation makes head-to-head comparison hard and the catalog sprawls. But the through-line, born at a 1976 clinic, has stayed remarkably intact: getting proven actives where they actually need to go.

Sesderma Azelac RU Liposomal Serum frosted dropper bottle, a multi-pathway depigmenting serum with liposomal azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, 4-butylresorcinol and retinol Multi-Pathway Pigment Corrector
Sesderma serum

Azelac RU Liposomal Serum

One of the most complete pigment-correcting serums you can buy without a prescription: azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, 4-butylresorcinol, two retinoids and vitamin C stacked in one liposomal bottle. For stubborn melasma and post-acne marks on resilient skin it's a genuine workhorse. The trade-off is potency — alcohol, retinoids and a slow break-in make it wrong for sensitive skin and off-limits in pregnancy.

Sesderma Retises Nano Antiaging Cream tube, a nanosome-encapsulated retinol antiaging cream with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and soothing actives from a dermatologist-founded brand Encapsulated Retinol For Tender Skin
Sesderma retinoid

Retises Nano Antiaging Cream

A genuinely usable retinol for people who've struggled to tolerate one: Sesderma encapsulates pure retinol in nanosomes and buffers it with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and licorice-derived soothers, so you get a meaningful dose with a softer landing. It smooths texture and brightens steadily over weeks. Just respect the basics — it's a nighttime, non-pregnancy retinoid that still needs a careful break-in.

Sesderma Acglicolic Classic Liposomal Serum frosted dropper bottle, a 6% glycolic acid exfoliating serum cushioned with ceramides and antioxidants from a dermatologist-founded brand Barrier-Cushioned Glycolic Serum
Sesderma exfoliant

Acglicolic Classic Liposomal Serum

A glycolic serum that treats your barrier as a partner, not a casualty: around 6% glycolic acid, split free and liposomal for a smoother ramp, comes packed with a full ceramide-cholesterol-phytosphingosine lipid set plus vitamin C and ergothioneine. It resurfaces and brightens while replenishing the lipids the acid depletes. The asterisks are fragrance, parabens and alcohol that keep it off sensitive skin.

Sesderma Factor G Renew Rejuvenating Serum frosted dropper bottle, a biotech anti-aging serum with plant-produced growth factors, peptides and antioxidants from a dermatologist-founded brand Biotech Growth-Factor Serum
Sesderma serum

Factor G Renew Rejuvenating Serum

A genuinely sophisticated serum carrying a marketing story that outruns its evidence. The peptides, apple stem cells and four-molecule antioxidant network are real, well-formulated work, and the texture is a pleasure. But the headline plant-biotech growth factors sit on emerging science, and at over eighty dollars you're paying a premium largely for that uncertainty. Lovely to use; best judged on the peptides, not the hype.

Sesderma C-Vit Liposomal Serum frosted glass dropper bottle, a liposomal vitamin C and polyphenol antioxidant brightening serum from a dermatologist-founded Spanish brand Liposomal Vitamin C Brightener
Sesderma serum

C-Vit Liposomal Serum

A smart, easygoing take on vitamin C: instead of a high dose of unstable L-ascorbic acid, Sesderma wraps the gentler 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid and a polyphenol antioxidant stack in liposomes for stability and comfort. It absorbs like water, rarely stings, and brightens subtly over weeks. The catch is undisclosed potency plus fragrance, citrus oil and alcohol that make it a poor fit for sensitive skin.

More about Sesderma

Sesderma is a Spanish dermocosmetics laboratory founded in 1989 by dermatologist Dr. Gabriel Serrano and headquartered in Puzol (Valencia), Spain.

The brand is built around liposomal/nanotech encapsulation technology to deliver actives such as glycolic acid, azelaic acid and vitamin C. Its credibility is anchored in its founder's dermatological credentials and the company's R&D-driven, encapsulation-focused positioning, with the family still leading the business.
