The story behind Soft Services Read the full story

The pitch deck practically wrote itself from a recurring frustration: two women in their thirties, still dealing with body acne, comparing notes on a category nobody seemed to take seriously. Annie Kreighbaum had spent years as executive editorial director of Into The Gloss and later VP of brand development at Glossier, and she had noticed something from the traffic data: articles about niche body concerns, the ingrowns and the bumpy arms and the back breakouts, drew outsized readership while shelves offered almost nothing to solve them. Rebecca Zhou had run digital product at the same company before co-founding the apparel label Offhours, so she understood how to build a thing people actually wanted to use, not just admire. They raised three hundred thousand dollars from friends and family, then closed a seed round in about two weeks led by Harrison Metal's Michael Dearing and Collaborative Fund's Craig Shapiro, with operators from Care/of and other consumer brands rounding out the table. The debut was three products and a clear point of view: the Buffing Bar exfoliating soap at twenty-eight dollars, the Smoothing Solution chemical exfoliant at thirty-four, and the Carea Cream body lotion at forty. The cultural signature was the marketing discipline. Rather than invent insecurities, the founders wrote plainly about who each product was and was not for, and they built an education hub called the Mass Index to explain the conditions instead of fear-selling against them. That restraint extends to packaging and communication that treat the customer as an adult. The honest tension is price; some of the same workhorse acids exist cheaper at the drugstore, and the range stays small by design. But for body skin that has gone quietly ignored, this was one of the first places engineered to treat it like a real concern.

Soft Services Carea Cream, a fragrance-free 10% urea daily body lotion that hydrates and softens dry, bumpy skin Everyday Urea Softener
Soft Services body care

Carea Cream

Carea Cream is that rare everyday body lotion that actually does something — a treatment-level 10% urea that hydrates and gently resurfaces rough, bumpy skin, cushioned by squalane, colloidal oatmeal and centella. It's fragrance-free, lightweight, broadly suitable, and ideal as daily maintenance for KP or persistent dryness. The price is indie-premium and very dry winter skin may want more, but as a smart daily softener it's excellent.

Soft Services Comfort Cleanse Body Wash, a fragrance-free gentle glycerin-rich body wash for dry and sensitive skin Sensitive-Skin Comfort Wash
Soft Services body care

Comfort Cleanse Body Wash

Comfort Cleanse is body wash done thoughtfully — ultra-mild glucoside surfactants instead of harsh sulfates, an unusually high 25% glycerin, and a sugar-derived hydration complex, all fragrance-free. It cleans without stripping, leaves skin soft rather than squeaky, doubles as a shave lube, and is gentle enough for the most reactive skin. The soft lather and premium price are the only trade-offs in an otherwise near-universally suitable wash.

Soft Services Theraplush Overnight Hand Cream, a refillable 0.05% retinol hand treatment with colloidal oatmeal, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid Cult Hand-Retinol Pick
Soft Services body care

Theraplush Overnight Hand Cream

Theraplush treats aging hands like a genuine skincare concern, delivering 0.05% retinol in a castor-oil and colloidal-oatmeal cushion that resurfaces crepey skin without the flaking you'd expect somewhere this exposed. It's pricey for a hand cream and the 50ml pod empties quickly, but as one of the only dedicated hand retinols on the market, it earns its niche.

Soft Services Smoothing Solution, a fragrance-free 10% lactic acid and urea gel body exfoliant for keratosis pilaris and rough texture KP Chemical-Peel Pick
Soft Services exfoliant

Smoothing Solution

The Soft Services Smoothing Solution is one of the smartest body chemical exfoliants going — a 10% lactic acid paired with keratolytic, hydrating urea and a genuine soothing complex of centella, arnica and panthenol. It smooths KP, strawberry skin and rough texture effectively while staying gentle enough for frequent use. It's fragrance-free and broadly tolerable; the price and the need for ongoing use are the only real catches.

Soft Services Buffing Bar, a fragrance-free microcrystal physical body exfoliant for keratosis pilaris and ingrown hairs KP Smoothing MVP
Soft Services exfoliant

Buffing Bar

The Soft Services Buffing Bar is a genuinely clever take on body exfoliation — fine mineral microcrystals set in a shea-rich, fragrance-free soap base that polishes away KP bumps and ingrown-hair roughness without the gouge of a grainy scrub. It's effective, gentle, and broadly suitable; the main gripes are a bar that can crumble and a price that asks a bit much for body care.

More about Soft Services

Founded in 2021 as an actives-forward body-care brand; its products are well regarded for body acne and keratosis pilaris, but as a young brand it has limited long-term independent clinical validation.
