Most acne brands are built on a quiet insult: there is something wrong with you, and we will fix it. Starface was built on the opposite premise, that a pimple could be an accessory. Its founders looked at the acne aisle, all clinical whites and "blast it, eliminate it" messaging, and asked why a condition that affects roughly 95 percent of people at some point was being framed as a shameful defect. Their answer was a bright-yellow, star-shaped sticker you would actually want people to see.
Starface launched in September 2019, co-founded by former Elle.com beauty director Julie Schott and serial entrepreneur Brian Bordainick. The debut product, Hydro-Star, was a star-shaped hydrocolloid patch sold in a cheerful yellow compact, 32 patches for 22 dollars. The concept fused two existing ideas: the Korean hydrocolloid pimple patch, effective but always beige and apologetic, and the playful sticker filters teenagers were already slapping on selfies. Worn openly by the likes of Justin Bieber and Florence Pugh, the stars became a Gen Z signature.
The business followed the hype. Starface became profitable in 2023, grew past 90 million dollars in annual revenue, and has sold well over a billion patches. In early 2026 it closed a roughly 105-million-dollar minority funding round led by new investors, with Schott and Bordainick keeping control. Schott has since become something of a brand-building force, founding ventures well beyond skincare.
The honest read: the underlying product genuinely works. Hydrocolloid is a proven wound-dressing material that absorbs fluid and protects a blemish while it heals. But it only does its job on raised, fluid-filled whiteheads; it does nothing for blackheads, cystic acne, or the causes of breakouts. Starface's real innovation is not chemical but emotional and aesthetic, destigmatizing acne and making treatment fun. You pay a premium over a plain pharmacy hydrocolloid patch for the design and the attitude. For the right blemish, and the right mindset, that is a trade plenty of people are happy to make.
