The story behind Stratia Read the full story

Long before there was a label to put on a bottle, Alli Reed graduated from UC Berkeley with a music degree and a chemistry minor, then bounced through an unglamorous resume that read nothing like a beauty CV: nonprofit work at the Homeless Youth Alliance, event planning, and finally copywriting at a tech advertising agency. Cosmetic chemistry started as an after-hours obsession rather than a plan. She taught herself the discipline from journals and forums, then started mixing batches on her own kitchen counter, eventually landing on two formulas she actually liked and wore herself.

The launch was almost comically lean. She put in roughly $3,000 of personal savings to cover raw materials, packaging, and the paperwork to incorporate, then made eight bottles each of those two products and listed them online. The math worked fast: the operation reportedly broke even by its second month. For the better part of a year she kept her advertising job, shipping orders around her nine-to-five, until demand made the double life impossible and she went all in around March 2017.

Reed describes her approach as deliberately "unsexy" — no designer fragrance, no buzzy trend ingredients, just combinations with decades of peer-reviewed support behind them. That philosophy shaped how the company grew rather than how it marketed itself. Production migrated out of the kitchen into a warehouse in West Carson, and the first hires came slowly and practically: a part-time warehouse assistant, then customer service and social, then a marketing director Reed has called a genuine turning point. The catalog has since stretched beyond the original moisturizers into items like the Skincare Egg set, which fuses two of the brand's bestselling barrier products. Through all of it the operating logic has stayed the same — solve a real formulation problem cheaply and competently, and let the results recruit the next customer.

Night Shift Retinoid Night Oil

Night Shift stacks retinol, retinyl palmitate, and bakuchiol in a stable squalane-based oil, spreading retinoid activity across multiple pathways so you get meaningful results without the red, flaky adjustment period. For dry, normal, or mature skin that's been scared off retinoids by one bad serum, this is an unusually thoughtful re-entry point.

More about Stratia

Founded in 2016 by a self-taught formulator, Stratia builds its formulas on published dermatological research, notably skin-barrier lipid science, and radical ingredient transparency, though it lacks the in-house clinical trials of larger dermatologist-developed brands.
