The story behind Stryx Read the full story

The company was born from a pimple in a wedding photo. On his wedding day, Devir Kahan woke up with a conspicuous zit, and, with no discreet way to cover it, watched it become an unwanted co-star in the pictures he would keep forever. The takeaway was not embarrassment so much as opportunity: millions of men had skin they would quietly like to fix and no acceptable way to do it. Stryx was his answer.

Launched in 2019, Stryx set out to build cosmetics for men from the ground up, starting with a clever signature product, a bullet of concealer in a discreet, pen-like applicator that looked like a grooming tool rather than a makeup compact, plus a tinted moisturizer. The co-founding story has a charming symmetry: Kahan's eventual partner, the men's-style YouTuber Jon Shanahan, received a sample, happened to have a breakout the very day it arrived, tried it on camera, and was so impressed he came aboard to run marketing. The brand went through a startup accelerator, raised venture funding, landed in mass retailers, and pitched on Shark Tank, where its bold valuation drew interest but no closed deal.

In 2023 the founders sold Stryx to a platform that scales online brands, and both eventually moved on to other ventures.

The honest read: Stryx deserves real credit for chipping at the stigma around men wearing makeup and for a genuinely smart product designed around how a self-conscious first-timer actually wants to buy and use it, discreet, simple, fairly priced. The hype-aware caveat is that 'skincare and cosmetics for men' is, formulation-wise, largely a positioning choice; the actives and pigments are not fundamentally different from those in any cosmetic, and 'because you are a man' is a marketing wedge more than a dermatological necessity. It is a competent, well-conceived grooming line with a real cultural point to make; just do not assume the 'for men' label reflects some special chemistry. The innovation was the packaging and the permission, not the molecules.

Stryx Tinted Moisturizer tube, a men's complexion-correcting tinted moisturizer with niacinamide, salicylic acid, and centella for redness and acne coverage Men's Grooming Gateway Pick
Stryx moisturizer

Tinted Moisturizer

A tinted moisturizer engineered for the man who'd never set foot in the makeup aisle — discreet, buildable coverage that cancels redness and blemishes while niacinamide and salicylic acid quietly do skincare underneath. The shade range runs light and the silicone finish isn't universal, but as a grooming gateway it genuinely delivers.

Stryx SPF Moisturizer, men's broad-spectrum SPF 30 daily face moisturizer with avobenzone, octisalate, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and green tea Men's 2-in-1 SPF Pick
Stryx spf moisturizer

SPF Moisturizer

Stryx's SPF Moisturizer is the rare men's daily SPF that actually earns the 'moisturizer' half of its name — broad-spectrum SPF 30 filters joined by a collagen peptide, green tea and vitamin E antioxidants, and a brightening agent, all in a matte, white-cast-free finish men will actually wear. The chemical filters and a dose of coconut oil are the only real caveats.

Stryx Gel Cleanser, men's vegan gel face wash with tea tree leaf oil, aloe, and provitamin B5 in a 3.3 oz squeeze tube Budget Men's Oily-Skin Wash
Stryx cleanser

Gel Cleanser

Stryx's Gel Cleanser is an honest, $12 men's face wash that does one job well: it strips away sunscreen, sweat, and the brand's own concealer with a satisfying sulfate lather. Oily and combination skin will like the deep-cleaned matte finish, but the sulfate base runs drying, so dry and sensitive types should look elsewhere — and everyone should moisturize after.

Stryx Anti-Shine Mattifier, men's tinted mineral mattifying powder tool with talc and calcium carbonate for instant oil and shine control Instant Shine Killer
Stryx treatment

Anti-Shine Mattifier

Stryx's Anti-Shine Mattifier is a tinted mineral powder tool that does one thing genuinely well: it erases forehead, nose, and scalp shine the instant you apply it, and it looks natural doing so. Just be clear on what it is — a cosmetic oil-absorber, not a skincare treatment — and that oily and combination skin are the only real audience.

Pimple Patches

Stryx's Pimple Patches are exactly what they should be: thin, genuinely invisible hydrocolloid stickers that flatten and calm a surfaced whitehead overnight while stopping you from picking at it. The technology is proven and the larger sizing suits men's blemishes well — just know they only work on pimples that have come to a head, not deep cysts or blackheads.

More about Stryx

Founded in 2019 as a men's 'functional cosmetics' brand (sold to brand-aggregator Foundry in 2023); its products are conventional cosmetics positioned for men, with limited independent clinical validation and a marketing-led rather than formulation-led differentiation.
