The branding mind behind Sun Bum had already given the world the Taco Bell Chihuahua. Tom Rinks was a serial marketer with an eclectic resume when a fellow parent at his kid's elementary school mentioned a struggling little sunscreen company and asked whether it was worth saving. Rinks looked at the market and saw a gaping hole: sun care was clinical, cold, and pharmaceutical, with no brand speaking to the people who actually lived in the sun, the surfers, lifeguards, and beach bums. He and his partner rebuilt the company, landed on the name Sun Bum and the tagline "Trust the Bum," and, rejecting the obvious surfer mascot as too predictable, crowned it with a sunglasses-wearing monkey inspired by Japanese street art.
Sun Bum launched in 2010 out of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and grew through grassroots beach culture: free samples to surfers and lifeguards, event sponsorships, surf-shop loyalty, and a signature tropical banana scent that made the products instantly recognizable. The lineup stayed disciplined, with sunscreens, SPF lip balms, beachy hair care, and a Baby Bum line, and leaned into reef-conscious, vegan, and cruelty-free positioning.
The trajectory was a classic build-and-exit. Backed for years by the private-equity firm VMG Partners, Sun Bum grew from curiosity into one of the top sun-care brands in the United States, and in 2022 the consumer-goods giant SC Johnson acquired it in a deal reportedly valuing the company north of 400 million dollars. Headquarters had by then moved from Florida to Encinitas, California.
The honest read: Sun Bum's superpower is branding, not chemistry. The sunscreens are competent, broad-spectrum, FDA-regulated SPF that pass the same standards as everyone else's; you are buying the vibe, the yellow-and-wood aesthetic, and that banana smell more than any unique sun-protection technology. The reef-safe messaging is real for the mineral line but rests on an unregulated marketing term. As pleasant, reliable, widely available everyday sun protection, it earns its shelf space. Just don't mistake the personality for performance: the magic here is the monkey, and the chemistry is simply solid.
