The story behind Sunplay Read the full story

Half of Sunplay's pedigree traces to a soap-and-shaving-cream startup in 1880s Kansas. Albert Alexander Hyde launched the Yucca Company in Wichita in 1889, and in 1894 he stumbled onto the product that would outlive everything else he made: a menthol-and-petrolatum chest rub he called Mentholatum. It sold so well he eventually scrapped the other products and renamed the whole business after it, complete with a "Little Nurse" mascot whose face graced the tins for generations. That American liniment company is the half-namesake of the modern sun-care line.

The Japanese half supplies the sunscreen science. After Rohto took control of Mentholatum, the combined group folded sun protection into a portfolio that already included eye drops, the Hada Labo hydration range, and the Acnes line, and Sunplay became its dedicated UV brand. It is built on the same engineering as the group's Skin Aqua family, sharing the watery-gel and essence textures, hyaluronic-acid and ceramide hydration boosters, and the SPF50+ PA++++ broad-spectrum ceiling that defines elegant Japanese sun chemistry.

Rather than chase the Japanese domestic market, Sunplay made its name across Southeast Asia, growing into a category leader in markets like Vietnam where it became a go-to daily sunscreen. The lineup splits along use cases: moisturizing UV gels for everyday wear, tone-up essences with a cosmetic tint, mineral formulas pitched at sensitive skin, and water-resistant versions for sport. The appeal is texture as much as protection, the near-weightless, fast-vanishing feel that converts sunscreen skeptics. The credibility rests less on published trials than on decades of refinement in a country that treats daily UV defense as a baseline ritual, not an optional step.

Sunplay sunscreen

Clear Water SPF50+ PA++++

An ultra-light, broad-spectrum SPF50+ PA++++ fluid with a clever blue color-correcting tint that brightens and neutralizes yellow cast, plus a hydrating vitamin-and-HA layer, all at a low price. It is a strong everyday tone-up sunscreen for normal-to-oily skin, with alcohol the main reason dry or sensitive skin should think twice.

Sunplay sunscreen

Sport UV Lotion SPF120 PA++++

A pocket-sized sport sunscreen with a strong eight-filter system, including zinc oxide, Tinosorb S and Uvinul A Plus, in a quick-drying matte base designed to go onto damp skin and resist sweat. It suits oily, active skin well, but alcohol and menthol can sting sensitive skin and eyes, and the SPF120 figure promises more than it delivers over SPF 50+.

Sunplay sunscreen

Super Block Sunblock Lotion SPF50+ PA++++

A quietly excellent budget sunscreen that punches far above its price: mineral zinc and titanium plus the modern, photostable Uvinul A Plus UVA filter deliver genuine broad-spectrum SPF50+ PA++++ in a water-resistant outdoor formula for under ten dollars. The octinoxate and a slightly silicone-heavy feel are the only real caveats. For everyday and outdoor protection on a budget, it's hard to beat.

Sunplay Ultra Shield Lotion SPF130 PA++++ 35g red bottle in blister pack Beach-Day SPF130 Workhorse
Sunplay sunscreen

Ultra Shield Lotion SPF130 PA++++

A tough, water-resistant hybrid sunscreen for long days outdoors, with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and five chemical filters in a fast-setting silicone lotion. The SPF130 number is more marketing than meaningful extra protection, and alcohol, octinoxate and a volatile-silicone base make it a poor fit for sensitive skin, but as a beach and sports sunscreen it earns its reputation.

Sunplay sunscreen

Ultra Shield UV Body Mist SPF130 PA++++

A well-built, fragrance-free body mist with eight UV filters, including photostable Tinosorb S, Uvinul A Plus and zinc oxide, that feels light and dries quickly on hot days. The SPF130 figure is mostly marketing, since protection above SPF 50 adds very little, and like all sprays it only works if applied generously and rubbed in.

Water Kids Lotion Disney SPF60+ PA+++

A fragrance-free, alcohol-free children's sunscreen with a strong filter lineup, including zinc oxide, Tinosorb M and S, and Uvinul A Plus, in a gentle pH 5.5 lotion with chamomile. The Disney packaging helps with reluctant kids, but five parabens, including EU-banned isobutylparaben, and octinoxate are surprising choices for a children's product.

Sunplay sunscreen

Watery Cool Lotion SPF75 PA+++

A light, fast-drying face-and-body sunscreen with a genuinely modern filter system and a signature menthol chill that makes it pleasant in tropical heat. Oily and combination skin will like the finish, but menthol, alcohol, fragrance and methylparaben together make it a poor choice for sensitive or dry skin, and the cooling is a sensation, not extra protection.

Sunplay sunscreen

Kids UV Mist SPF60 PA++++

A paraben-free, fragrance-free and alcohol-free children's spray with a strong seven-filter system, olive-derived emollients and a child-proof cap, sized for families at 200ml. It makes covering wriggling kids much faster, but sprays need careful technique to avoid under-application and inhalation, and octinoxate and octocrylene may not suit every parent's preferences.

Skin Aqua Sarafit UV Mist Fragrance Free SPF50+ PA++++

A genuinely broad-spectrum, fragrance-free SPF50+ PA++++ aerosol mist with a modern filter set, ideal for reapplying UV protection over makeup through the day. It is one of the better-protective spray sunscreens at a fair price, with the inherent under-application risk of any spray the main reason to treat it as a top-up rather than your only sunscreen.

Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++

A gentle, moisturising, fragrance-free and alcohol-free sunscreen that dry and sensitive skin will find comfortable to wear every day. Its three-filter system is solid if lean, and it leaves no white cast. Oily skin may find it too dewy, and a verified US price is hard to pin down.

Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence Latte Beige SPF50+ PA++++

A broad-spectrum SPF50+ PA++++ tinted essence in a natural latte-beige shade that doubles as a blurring, pore-softening makeup base, with modern filters and a light skincare layer at a budget price. It is the most foundation-like of the Skin Aqua tone-up sunscreens, with fragrance and a single beige shade the main reasons it won't suit everyone.

Skin Aqua UV Watery Gel SPF50+ PA++++

A cult-favorite Japanese gel sunscreen that crams six modern UV filters into a watery, near-weightless texture to earn a genuine SPF50+ PA++++, then adds ectoin and hyaluronic acid for hydration, all at a remarkably low price. It is one of the best value broad-spectrum sunscreens for oily and combination skin, with alcohol and fragrance the main reasons dry or sensitive skin should pause.

Sport UV Body Mist SPF120 PA++++

An alcohol-free sport body mist with a strong, all-organic filter system, including Tinosorb S, Uvinul A Plus and ethylhexyl triazone, that sprays evenly and dries without stinging. It is a comfortable pick for beach days and team sports, though added fragrance and octocrylene may bother sensitive skin, the SPF120 claim is mostly marketing, and sprays still need generous application.

More about Sunplay

Sunplay is a sun-care brand from the Rohto-Mentholatum group, the partnership formed when Japan's Rohto Pharmaceutical (founded 1899) acquired The Mentholatum Company in 1988.

It shares the Skin Aqua sunscreen technology line and is backed by Rohto's long pharmaceutical heritage, though the exact launch year of the Sunplay name is not clearly documented; Rohto-Mentholatum introduced it as a leading sunscreen brand across Southeast Asian markets around 2000.
