The label first read Niu Body, a name borrowed from the Hawaiian word for coconut, and the formulas were genuinely hand-mixed in a kitchen before a single retailer would touch them. The pairing behind it was unusual: one half a chemical engineer who could actually build a formula, the other half a business graduate who could sell it, friends from Queen's University who started the company as a moonlighting side hustle while holding down day jobs. They didn't go all-in until September 2018, when they quit those jobs to chase a coconut-themed beauty company that almost nobody had heard of yet.
The reinvention came from listening to who was actually buying. The early pastel-and-emoji Gen Z packaging and chatty 'hey lovelies' tone were aimed at one audience, but the real customers turned out to be mid-twenties to mid-thirties shoppers who read ingredient lists and Googled actives. Working with the design studio Renga, the duo scrapped the playful identity for something cleaner and more grown-up, renaming the line and rebuilding the labels around hero percentages stated right on the bottle: a 49 percent jojoba oil serum, a grape-stem-cell day cream, plainly named so you know what you're paying for.
The operating discipline is what holds it together. Products are vegan and built around naturally derived actives that have published research behind them, and the company maintains a searchable ingredient glossary linking out to the studies it cites, an unusual degree of homework for an indie at this price. The thesis throughout has been that 'natural' and 'effective' and 'cheap' shouldn't be mutually exclusive choices, a frustration the founders felt firsthand as broke graduates priced out of the clean-beauty aisle. That same refusal to compromise on cost is the through-line from the coconut kitchen to the shelves it sits on now.

More about Three Ships
Founded in 2017 in Toronto by Connie Lo and Laura Burget, Three Ships is an independent, venture-backed natural skincare brand emphasizing transparency and affordability (everything under $40).
It selects ingredients with published research behind them, but the brand itself is young and is not a clinical-research house with its own trials.
