The founder was fifty-six and already a veteran when he took the job that would become his legacy. Yasushi Ishibashi had joined Kanebo Cosmetics back in 1973 and spent his career helping shape some of Japan's most respected prestige lines, including the makeup houses RMK and SUQQU, before moving to Pola Orbis in 2007 with an unusual stated goal: to work at least ten more years and build one final brand from scratch. The botanical line that resulted was that capstone project, conceived by someone with nothing left to prove and a very specific idea of what he wanted to make.
What he wanted was a prestige brand built entirely on home-grown Japanese organic raw materials, an idea closer to a discipline than a marketing angle. He traveled the country sourcing essential oils and botanicals himself, and the brand's sustainability instincts show in details like its use of tea seeds, the part of the tea plant often discarded as economically worthless, pressed into oil. Onto that natural sourcing he layered deliberately refined glass packaging meant to signal quiet, considered luxury rather than crunchy naturalism.
The early years nearly broke the thesis. Launched into a slowing Japanese economy, the brand then ran straight into the psychological aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, which gutted appetite for premium beauty, and for several years it could not find the audience its founder had envisioned. The turn came around 2013, as recovering consumer confidence under that era's economic policies revived demand for prestige makeup and skincare; sales surged, the brand became a department-store cosmetics-floor mainstay, and it expanded across Asia.
The through-line is craft over claims. The primers and plant-based treatments are genuinely well-made and backed by serious group R&D, but the premium price buys the sourcing story, the design language, and the J-beauty restraint more than any clinically proven advantage, which is precisely the appeal for buyers who want considered natural-leaning skincare.

Launched in 2009 under ACRO, a subsidiary of Japan's Pola Orbis Holdings; a natural/botanical prestige J-beauty brand backed by the group's R&D, whose positioning rests on Japanese-grown botanical ingredients and formulation craft rather than published clinical trials.
