The number in the name is a biology lesson. Skin renews itself on roughly a 28-day cycle, and Toun28 built an entire brand around taking that rhythm literally — products tuned to changing skin and changing seasons, once delivered through a subscription that arrived on the 28th of each month. The "Toun" half is a play on "put on," which is why the brand cheerfully calls its products Put-Ons rather than serums or creams.
The company was founded in South Korea in 2016 by two people who'd each been burned, literally, by conventional cosmetics. Maria Jung had spent over fifteen years as a cosmetics researcher, including at an ingredient-development institute, and developed a chemical allergy from years of testing formulas on her own skin. Her co-founder, Park Jun-su, came from LG Electronics, where he'd worked on UX and consumer-data analysis, and had his own sensitivities to certain synthetic ingredients. Their shared frustration — that "effective" so often meant "irritating," and that the whole category generated mountains of plastic — became the brief.
The response was unusually data-driven for a clean brand. Toun28 analyzed skin information from tens of thousands of people through counseling to design a tightly segmented range of soaps and treatments, each matched to a specific skin type and concern, and committed to formulas with high ratios of organic raw materials and without certain synthetic preservatives. Sustainability ran through everything: minimal, recyclable or plastic-free packaging in a category notorious for excess.
The honest read is that this is one of the more substantive players in sustainable K-beauty — the founders' research credentials are real, the data-led product matching is more than a gimmick, and the environmental commitments are genuine rather than decorative. The trade-offs come with the territory: a deliberately pared-back, preservative-conscious, often soap-based range won't suit everyone, and the "no chemicals" framing common to clean brands is more marketing posture than science. But as a thoughtful, eco-minded option from founders who clearly care about both efficacy and waste, it earns its niche honestly.
