The story behind Typology Read the full story

Ning Li's story begins not in a lab but in a Chinatown pastry shop. He arrived in France at sixteen from southern China speaking no French, paid his way through school by working in that bakery, and eventually graduated from the elite HEC Paris business school in 2006. His instincts were always commercial and digital before they were cosmetic: he co-founded an event-sales e-commerce business, Myfab, sold to the PPR group, then helped build a furniture juggernaut whose pricing model — cutting out middlemen to sell design at accessible prices — would quietly become the template for everything that came next. The skincare idea crystallized over a tube of baby cream. Unable to decode the ingredient list on a product for his newborn daughter, he saw the same opacity he had stripped out of furniture retail and decided to apply the playbook to a category notorious for obscurity. The signature gesture is the number on the front of the bottle: rather than burying an active's strength in fine print, formulas state the percentage plainly and keep total ingredient counts in single digits, a deliberate rebuke to the thirty- and forty-item INCI lists common elsewhere. Trading on well-chosen, on-trend actives — squalane, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, retinol — the brand climbed to become the top online skincare seller in its home market within roughly two years before pushing into the UK, US and beyond, later adding physical stores to a model built online-first. The catalog has broadened from single-active serums into oils, cleansers, masks and a genderless, refill-minded approach to packaging. The honest caveat is structural: radical transparency about what is inside a bottle is not the same as proof that the finished formula performs, and a short ingredient list is still only as good as how it is built.
