The story behind Uriage Read the full story

Roman legions crossing the Alps to conquer Gaul are said to have stumbled on a spring at the foot of the Belledonne massif and used its water to clean and soothe their wounds. The water itself is older still, having fallen as Alpine precipitation and then crept for decades through mineral-rich rock, surfacing near Grenoble carrying an unusually heavy load of salts that makes it isotonic, close in concentration to the body's own fluids. That single quirk of geology is the reason the spring kept drawing people back across two millennia.

The modern medical chapter began in the early 1800s, when Doctor Billerey tested and documented the water's properties around 1817 and rustic wood cabins for treatment went up shortly after, formalizing into a proper thermal spa in 1823 under the Marquise de Gautheron. Within a century French medical authorities had recognized the water's benefits, and the village of Uriage-les-Bains grew into a Belle Époque spa destination, its therapeutic thermal center still operating today on the same source.

Turning a spa into a skincare line meant treating the water as the active itself rather than mere base liquid: it is collected at source and stabilized to preserve that delicate mineral balance, then built into a facial mist, creams, cleansers, sunscreens and a notably broad baby range. That isotonic mist, gentle enough for infant and reactive skin, became the hero the rest of the catalog orbits, and the line spread into pharmacies across roughly eighty countries.

The honest read on its character: this is tolerability over fireworks. Thermal water genuinely soothes, hydrates and helps shore up the barrier, but its effects are quiet and modest, the supporting work of comfort rather than dramatic correction. For irritated, sensitive or post-procedure skin that is precisely the appeal; just do not expect a mineral mist to perform like a high-potency active serum.

More about Uriage

Laboratoires Dermatologiques d'Uriage was founded in 1992 and has been owned by Spain's Puig group since 2011.

Its products are built around Uriage thermal spring water, are developed with dermatologists and pharmacists, and are widely recommended in French pharmacies, though their efficacy rests largely on the gentle, soothing properties of the thermal water rather than high-potency actives.
