The story behind Vasanti Read the full story

It started with an insult dressed up as advice. At a high-end Chicago makeup studio, Pinki Gosal was told she simply needed more concealer to fix her dark circles, then handed the darkest shade on offer, which promptly turned ashy and grey against her skin. The deeper problem wasn't the application; it was that the cosmetics industry had never bothered to formulate for complexions like hers. That sting of being treated as a problem to be corrected rather than a customer to be served became the spark for everything that followed.

Gosal didn't go it alone. She joined forces with the Patel sisters, three siblings from an entrepreneurial family, and the four women decided to build the products the counter refused to make. Their first real breakthrough was a color-correcting concealer nicknamed Liquid VO2, engineered specifically for the middle and deeper tones that mainstream lines flattened into chalk. The whole catalog was reverse-engineered from that frustration: shades chosen to flatter warm undertones, textures meant to look like skin rather than sit on top of it.

What's interesting is how a makeup company drifted toward skincare as its center of gravity. As the line grew, the products people couldn't stop talking about were the ones that prepped and treated the skin underneath the color, which gradually shifted the brand's identity toward complexion care. The philosophy stayed consistent across both: gentle, multitasking, and designed first for the faces the legacy houses overlooked.

The trade-offs are the familiar ones for a tightly run independent. The assortment is curated rather than encyclopedic, the science is rooted in careful formulation rather than a deep pile of published trials, and a grain-based polish won't suit the most reactive skin. But the through-line, two decades on, remains that original mirror question, answered by the people who got tired of asking it.
