More about VersedThe story behind Versed Read the full story
Most skincare lines guess at what shoppers want, then hope. Versed essentially polled its way to a formula sheet. Before a single product existed, its parent media company already commanded a community of roughly sixteen million monthly readers plus millions of social followers, and the team mined that audience directly, even spinning up a closed Facebook group of a couple thousand skincare obsessives months ahead of launch to harvest specific requests on textures, ingredients and price. The brand was, in effect, reverse-engineered from its own customer base.
Katherine Power's earlier life explains the playbook. She co-founded that fashion-and-lifestyle publishing company back in 2006 and spent years learning how to read what a large, engaged readership actually buys, treating audience data the way a formulator treats an INCI list. Versed launched as the first brand out of the company's beauty incubator with a deliberately sweeping nineteen-product debut, an unusual full-routine rollout rather than a single hero, every item priced between roughly ten and twenty dollars.
Hitting that ceiling without hollowing out the formulas required cutting the usual cost drivers on purpose: no celebrity faces, no custom luxury componentry, no prestige-retail markup. The products were made vegan and cruelty-free and pitched to stricter European "clean" standards. The company grew into a genuine player, reportedly reaching tens of millions in annual sales and drawing outside investment, before a "quiet luxury" rebrand and leadership change reframed it in 2023.
The fair assessment separates the formulas from the framing. The core feat is real and harder than it looks: research-backed actives at levels that actually do something, at drugstore prices. Where a raised eyebrow is warranted is the marketing, where "clean," "non-toxic" and the popular line about Europe banning thousands more ingredients lean on framing more than demonstrated safety. The skincare is good; the label language is just slightly louder than the science requires.
