The story behind Blistex Read the full story

That little blue jar of medicated lip balm rattling around in millions of American glove compartments and handbags has been there, in one form or another, since 1947, and the same family still runs the company that makes it. Blistex traces back further still, to a Seattle pharmacist in the 1930s who cooked up an ointment for cold sores and chapped lips; in 1947 a businessman named Charles Arch incorporated Blistex in Chicago to sell it.

For nearly two decades the company was essentially a one-product operation, obsessively refining the water-and-oil emulsion of its lip ointment. The first Blistex lip balm followed in the 1950s, reportedly in the industry's first swivel-up stick, and in 1967 the company moved to Oak Brook, Illinois and built its own labs and factory so it controlled everything from formulation to packaging. Over the decades it added flavors, sunscreens, and jar formulas, launched longtime favorites, and quietly grew into a global lip-care leader selling in dozens of countries, while expanding through acquisitions into a small portfolio of consumer-health brands. It now produces well over a hundred million units a year, yet remains privately held by the third generation of the founding family.

The honest read: Blistex is exactly what it appears to be, namely affordable, effective, no-nonsense lip care from a brand that has been doing one thing for the better part of a century. Its medicated formulas use standard over-the-counter ingredients, think occlusives, menthol, camphor, and sometimes phenol, to relieve and protect chapped lips, and they work as advertised. The only thing worth flagging is the flip side of those tingly medicated actives: ingredients like menthol and camphor can feel soothing but can also be drying or mildly irritating for some, which is why a few people find themselves reapplying in a loop. For genuinely cracked, wind-burned lips it's a reliable rescue; for simple daily moisture, a plain occlusive balm does the job just as well.

Blistex lip care

DCT Daily Conditioning Treatment SPF 20

A petrolatum powerhouse that delivers serious lip moisture and SPF protection at a price that barely registers. The 55% petrolatum base is the gold standard of occlusive lip care. But the dated formulation — oxybenzone, menthol, camphor, phenol, and lanolin — reads like a 1990s ingredient list that never got the memo about modern clean formulation. Effective, affordable, and controversial.

Blistex lip care

Medicated Lip Balm SPF 15

The quintessential drugstore lip balm that generations grew up reaching for — a solid occlusive formula with basic SPF that genuinely seals in moisture, though the menthol-camphor tingle that made it famous is more performance art than medicine. At under $2, it's hard to argue with the value, but sensitive lips may find the 'medicated' ingredients create more problems than they solve.

Lip Medex

The lip equivalent of a fire extinguisher — you reach for it when things have gone wrong. Nearly 60% petrolatum with triple analgesic action delivers aggressive moisture protection and pain relief for lips that are cracked, raw, and protesting. Not elegant, not modern, and loaded with irritants, but when your lips are in genuine distress, few products work this immediately.

More about Blistex

Founded in 1947 by Charles Arch and still family-owned, Blistex is a legacy over-the-counter lip-care brand; its medicated products rely on standard OTC monograph actives rather than novel clinical research, which is typical for the lip-care category.
