A double melanoma diagnosis is what turned a painter and one-time professional poker player into a sunscreen maker. After moving west in 1998 to be near the ocean and earning an MFA at Pasadena's Art Center, the man behind the company watched doctors find skin cancer on his father's back and, about a year later, on his mother's chest. The scare rewrote his own sun habits, and when he went hunting for a daily formula pleasant enough to actually reapply, he came up empty and decided to make one himself.
The enterprise reportedly began in a Bonsall, California garage, with no chemistry training behind it. Rather than chase mainstream shelf space immediately, the company seeded itself through the resort-and-spa channel, where treatment menus and a wellness clientele made the eco-leaning, beach-meets-Venice identity an easy sell before it scaled into prestige department stores and dermatology-adjacent retail.
The product thesis has always been wearability over everything. Hero launches leaned on textures people would top up without thinking about it: the makeup-setting SPF mist, gossamer face and body sprays, and luminous serum-style screens that read like skincare rather than thick cream. That obsession with feel is genuinely the smartest thing about the lineup, because compliance, not coverage on paper, decides how protected someone actually stays through a day.
The range later widened across mineral and chemical filter systems, organic-content claims, and reef-conscious messaging, expanding internationally while keeping the Southern California fingerprint. The fair caveat is interpretive: a high botanical or organic percentage is pleasant marketing, but UV defense comes from the filter package and verified broad-spectrum rating, not from how much of the bottle qualifies as farmed. Shop the filters and the number; enjoy the rest as garnish.

More about COOLA
Founded around 2007 by Chris Birchby; a clean-leaning organic suncare brand built on a Farm to Face philosophy, where protection comes from its UV filters and SPF testing rather than its organic-ingredient content.
